KU's 0.98 point-per-possession mark actually was its fourth-worst mark of the season, with KU losing the other three games below it. That means holding a dangerous ISU offense to 0.891 PPP (its previous worst t was 1.038 PPP against Michigan) was the real key for the Jayhawks in their second straight victory at Hilton Coliseum.

“We accomplished what most teams dream of accomplishing. We beat Kansas at Kansas. Not many people can say they’ve done it,” Smart said. “It was a feeling of accomplishment. In high school, I did it (flip) after my two state championship games (at Marcus High in Flower Mound, Texas).”

With KU losing by 17 points, 48-31, at 16:37 in the second half, freshman guard Dakota Gonzalez scored eight straight points as part of a 14-4 Kansas run that cut the lead to seven with with 11:33 remaining. Texas responded with a six-point run of its own, and kept a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

“We graduated a lot of people from our (Big 12) indoor championship team, but at the same time, we are definitely excited that we can make sure we can try to pick up,” Redwine said. “Our athletes are really ready to step up and pick up where they left off last year. With that said, I think our coaches have done a really good job of getting the right people in that can kind of fill in the spots and help with the team that we have and make it better.”
