Kansas Jayhawks News and Notes 12.12.13

Today's look around the interwebs.

As promised, we have Weird Wednesday leftovers at the bottom of today's News and Notes.

KU Women play tonight. Volleyball plays tomorrow. Please join us on discussing both.

KU women hope to reverse losing streak tonight | KUsports.com

Junior forward Chelsea Gardner (15.1 points, 8.4 rebounds), junior guard Asia Boyd (10.6 points, 4.5 rebounds) and Harper (10.3 points, 3.5 rebounds) have led KU thus far, and Henrickson thinks the whole team is capable of getting past this recent slump.

Self: KU reacting too slow vs. zone | KUsports.com

“The ball sticks now. Guys are indecisive,” Self said, noting, “we haven’t reacted very well. The best zone offense I’ve ever seen is to have really good shooters and we haven’t shot the ball well against zones yet. We’re better shooters than this (5-20 threes vs. Colorado; 2-11 vs. Villanova; 8-19 vs. Florida).”

Column: Like predecessors, Mason should grow out of inconsistency, into talent | KUsports.com

There is no Robinson available to enable Self to ease Mason into playing the point, a position foreign to him until this season. Naadir Tharpe is two years ahead of Mason, the same experience gap between Collins and Robinson. So far, Tharpe hasn’t mastered the art of rapid ball movement. He’s a couple of inches shorter than Robinson, not as strong, and doesn’t defend as well.

Kansas freshman Andrew Wiggins needs help from his teammates - ESPN

Andrew Wiggins held the ball above his head and screamed in desperation.

With the game on the line in the final minutes of No. 19 Florida's 67-61 win over No. 13 Kansas on Tuesday night, his teammates had abandoned him on the baseline, nearly prompting a turnover on the inbound pass before Frank Mason rescued him.

That moment was a metaphor for this entire troubling start. Wiggins can't overcome Kansas' weaknesses alone. Even if he could walk on water – and he was otherworldly in his definitive 26-point, 11-rebound, two-block performance – the rules wouldn't let him pass to himself.

Dick Vitale: Kansas Jayhawks inexperience shows in loss at Florida Gators - ESPN

The last time Kansas lost three games this early in the season was 2006, when they opened 2-3. But coaches like Self and Florida's Billy Donovan are not afraid to schedule a game like this early in the season. Remember, both squads started the season in The Associated Press top 10. Self and Donovan don't worry about the result at this point of the season because they believe a game like this will help in the long run. Both coaches are secure in their position, and each should make it to the Hall of Fame down the line.

Safety Isaiah Johnson named Big 12's top newcomer on 'D' | KUsports.com

Although a handful of KU’s juco transfers fell through the cracks and made little or no impact for the Jayhawks in 2013, Johnson’s contributions were among the most valuable for a team that enjoyed significant defensive improvement, particularly in the secondary.

KU volleyball elated to be one of ‘elite 16’ | KUsports.com

In retrospect, Albers said the players now appreciate the tough road schedule Bechard and his staff put together this season, because those experiences (KU finished 10-3 in road matches and 3-1 at neutral sites) should make the next round of the tournament slightly easier to handle.
