Today marked Lance Leipold first practice as the head coach for KU football.

I waited until the end of the day to post this because I wanted to get some video embeds here for those who are into that sort of thing, BUT, today is the first official practice of the Lance Leipold era. If you’ll recall, he didn’t officially take over until the day after the spring game. The team has to go through a couple of practices before they can don full pads, but nevertheless, football is back.

Leipold and the coaching staff have a long way to go. They have to install completely new offensive and defensive schemes over the next three weeks before the team begins its week 1 prep for South Dakota, as obviously they weren’t here during spring ball. As they’re doing that, they have to evaluate the players on the field, in person, for the first time. Needless to say, there will likely be a lot of tape review and late evenings for the coaches this month. And eventually, they’ll have to settle on starters at key positions all over the field, particularly at quarterback.

Two things I’d like to note coming out of day 1 per Benton Smith:

Leipold says he’s in no rush to determine a starting quarterback, and won’t pin himself down by stating a deadline by which to do so.

Nine players were unable to partake in practice per a “training room” issue, including three key expected contributors in RB Velton Gardner, DE Steven Parker, and LB Alonso Person.

Here are some clips of practice from KUSports.com:
