99 days ago I started this countdown to KU football. I honestly didn’t think we’d be able to come up with 100 articles, but we did! We made it. And our reward is... um... well, it’s 12 games of Kansas football, presumably under David Beaty, where KU will be heavy underdogs regularly once conference play begins.
Per the roster at KUAthletics.com, KU has 114 players available in 2018. With apologies to Alfred Tennyson, I give you: The Charge of the ‘Hawk Brigade.
-
Half a league, half a league
Half a league onward,
All on Mount Oread
Rode the one hundred.
“Forward the ‘Hawk Brigade!
Charge for the win!” he said:
Down past Mount Oread
Ran the one hundred.
-
“Forward, the ‘Hawk Brigade!”
Was there a man dismay’d?
Not tho’ the players knew
Zenger had blunder’d:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to go and try:
Down past Mount Oread
Ran the one hundred.
-
Doubters to the right of them,
Doubters to the left of them,
The schedule ahead of them
Volley’d and thunder’d:
Cyclone and Sooner rough
Boldly they play’d and tough
Onto the field they ran
Into the game, a plan
Ran the one hundred.
-
Flash’d all their highlights there,
Flash’d as they jumped in air
Throwing the football there,
Charging the rival, while
All the world wonder’d:
Plunged into pregame hue
Right thro’ the line they blew;
Cowboy and Longhorn
Reel’d from the Rock Chalk tune
Shatter’d and sunder’d.
Then they ran back, but not
Not the one hundred.
-
Doubters to the right of them,
Doubters to the left of them,
The schedule behind them
Volley’d and thunder’d:
Cyclone and Sooner hell,
While coach and player fell,
They that had tried so well
Off of the field they came,
Rock Chalk for ever yell,
All that was left of them,
Left of one hundred.
-
When is their glory due?
History to subdue!
All the world wonder’d
Root for the boys in blue!
Root for the ‘Hawk Brigade,
Noble one hundred!
