Ryan Robertson played in one of the most star studded McDonalds All American games ever, with names like Kevin Garnett, Stephon Marbury, and Vince Carter, and while Robertson didn’t go on to have the NBA success that those guys did, his college success stacks up with pretty much anyone. In his four years at Kansas, Robertson won 121 games and won three straight conference titles.
He had plenty of individual success as well, finishing with 1, 055 points and 485 assists in his career, sitting just outside the top 10 all time for KU in assists. In 98 Robertson finished 1st in the Big 12 and third in the country in assists, and spent two seasons inside the Big 12 top 10 in win shares. He’s also 24th in Big 12 history in assists during his career.
Robertson could have finished much higher in the KU and Big 12 career assists mark if he hadn’t been selfless enough to move to the 2 spot as a senior to accommodate then freshman point guard Jeff Boschee. Robertson went from 6.4 assists per game as a junior to 3.2 as a senior. His overall game didn’t suffer, however, as he picked up the scoring slack left by the departures of Paul Pierce, Raef LaFrentz, and Billy Thomas. Robertson upped his scoring average to just under 13 ppg as a senior and showed that he was one of the more versatile offensive players in KU history. He’s also one of the more overlooked due to having to share a team with the aforementioned Pierce and LaFrentz, but with him appearing on Big 12 top 10 lists in both offensive and defensive win shares during his career, Robertson’s versatility and quality earns him a spot among the best 50 Jayhawks ever.
