Betting the Big 12: Week 4

Good Lord, Kansas State, what are you doing?

NCAA Football: Kansas State at Vanderbilt Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

Well, maybe Vanderbilt really is the best team in the SEC. Guess we’ll find out this weekend. But, nobody here cares about the SEC. Right? Right. How’d we do in the Big 12 last week?

LAST WEEK

Oklahoma State -13.5 @ Pittsburgh, WON $36

Kansas @ Ohio -7.5, WON $36

Kansas @ Ohio, Over 54 points, WON $36

Iowa State -10 @ Akron, WON $27

SMU @ TCU -19, WON $27

Tulane @ Oklahoma -33.5, WON $27

Kansas State @ Vanderbilt, Over 46.5 points, LOST $40

Arizona State @ Texas Tech -7.5, LOST $30

Texas @ USC -16.5, LOST $30

STATUS

Starting bank: $1,000

Week 3 Won/Loss: +$89

+/- for the year: +$192

New bank: $1,192

Last week: 6-3

Overall picks: 14-7

This year is going much better than last year. So, of course I expect that to come to a sudden, screeching halt.

I feel like a fool on that Vandy-KState game. Vegas did indeed know more than I did, as I predicted last week. Oh well, live and learn.

Also, hey Kansas, did you see Iowa State go on the road, to the MAC, and win by 30? That’s what’s SUPPOSED to happen.

Progress my ass.

Anyway. Standard reminder that this is for entertainment purposes only. I am not a real gambler. This is monopoly money. Do NOT take my advice (EVER). Never bet more than you can afford to lose. Bet with your head, not over it.

Who’s up first?

West Virginia @ Kansas

Line: West Virginia -21.5

O/U: 70

Moneyline: +1000

Welcome back to the 11 AM timeslot, Jayhawk fans. Get comfortable, I’m guessing you’re gonna see a lot of these. This game opened up at 19 points, and money is headed West Virginia’s way - and for good reason. Even if KU somehow scores 30 on a Big 12 defense (doubtful), there’s no doubt in my mind that West Virginia is putting up at least 50.

My bet: $50 West Virginia -21.5

Texas Tech @ Houston

Line: Houston -6.5

O/U: 71

Moneyline: +215

So, Houston has had a nice start to the season, getting a road win at Arizona before smoking Rice for the Bayou Bucket. It’s a big home game for the Cougars and #Motivation will surely be out in full force, right? After all, Houston really wants that Big 12 invite, and what better way to get it than to beat Oklahoma and Texas Tech in back-to-back seasons. I’m just not sure I can pick it, though.

My bet: $40 on the OVER

TCU @ Oklahoma State

Line: Oklahoma State -13

O/U: 71

Moneyline: +400

Both of these teams like scoring points. Neither of these teams has played anyone capable of testing their defenses. (OK, maybe TCU, they beat Arkansas 28-7. But come on. It’s Arkansas.) Will the defenses step up and snarl these offenses? I’m betting no.

My bet: $40 on the OVER

Oklahoma @ Baylor

Line: Oklahoma -28

O/U: 63

Moneyline: +2800

Look, I know we said we wouldn’t talk about Baylor anymore. But with conference play starting, that’s gonna make for less fun articles. So here we are.

It’s my understanding that Baylor figured a few things out on offense last week in Durham, but they still only scored 20 points. I’m not buying it. Baylor can’t score, Oklahoma can, and will do so A LOT.

My bet: $50 Oklahoma -28

Recap

$50 West Virginia -21.5

$40 Texas Tech @ Houston OVER 71 points

$40 TCU @ Oklahoma State OVER 71 points

$50 Oklahoma -28

DrCrushALot’s Picks of the Week

Each week, DrCrushALot will provide a maximum of five games that he likes.

Last Week: 4-0 (dammit Nebraska)

2017 record: 10-0

Starting Bank: $1,000

Week 3 Won/Loss: +108

Week 4 Picks

All lines were selected on Monday and as the week progressed all lines didn’t improve for me.

(Editor’s note: Doc has been scolded and reminded that he needs to make his picks with the lines from Wednesday. Hence why he’s getting West Virginia at 19.5 while I have them at 21.5. Ditto TCU-Oklahoma State.)

Utah @ Arizona +2.5: Utah is improving and had a great solid victory this year, while Arizona lost it's only legit game this year.

Bet: $20 Utah -2.5

West Virginia @ Kansas +19.5: West Virginia’s offense is clicking and Kansas as a whole is not, this isn't going to be pretty for you KU fans to witness.

Bet: $30 West Virginia -19.5

TCU @ Oklahoma State -11: I'm riding the Oklahoma St train until someone stops their offense.

Bet: $50 Oklahoma State -11

Rutgers @ Nebraska -14: My ass this Nebraska team is a 14 favorite over any D1 school after last week.

Bet: $20 Rutgers +14

Interesting Betting Nugget of the Week: Vegas has caught up to the terribleness of Missouri - they are currently 19.5 point dogs after being 8 point favorites last week.
