The Jayhawks opened up the 2017 season in style yesterday at the Wolfpack Invitational, fighting off a tough NC State team in four sets, 25-20, 25-23, 23-25, 26-24.

NC State isn’t the toughest opponent KU will face in the non-con, but the Wolfpack aren’t pushovers, either. They were picked to finish 5th in the 15-team ACC, and have two preseason All-Conference selections on their roster. In 2016, NC State won 20 matches and claimed two Top-20 wins.

KU will clearly need to play better in the future if they are to accomplish their goals. For example, there were a few instances of miscommunication that resulted in a ball hitting the floor, some overpassing, and a few other mental mistakes, but those should be remedied as the team plays more matches together.

Regardless, it’s a good win over a solid NC State solid squad that was playing on its home floor, and you’ll always take those.

Up next, KU will take on the Missouri Valley’s preseason favorite, Missouri State, on Saturday, Aug 26, at 9:30 AM Jayhawk time, followed by a rematch with NC State at 6 PM. The rematch with NC State will be available on WatchESPN.
