Kansas Football Recruiting: Jayhawks beef up D-line

David Beaty continues to strike gold in Louisiana.

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

Troy James, a 6'4" 275 lb DE from Baton Rouge, LA, gave the Kansas Jayhawks a verbal commitment at 5 PM on Twitter earlier this evening.

James, a 3-star recruit per 247Sports, picked the Jayhawks over offers from Arkansas, Indiana, NC State, Wake Forest, and a host of non Power-5 schools.

James was the second commit of the day for Kansas, joining fellow DE Jamie Tago.  Tago, 6'3" 250 lbs, was a two-star recruit out of American Samoa in the 2013 class who signed with Hawaii.  He will spend the 2016 season at Garden City CC before transferring to KU to join the Jayhawks in 2017.

Here is the up-to-date class of 2017:

Name Pos Size Rank Hometown
Dominic Williams RB 5'8" 185 lbs *** Frisco, TX
Travis Jordan WR 6'2" 185 lbs *** Marrero, LA
Reggie Roberson WR 6'0" 180 lbs *** Mequite, TX
Takulve Williams WR 6'0" 199 lbs *** New Orleans, LA
Joseph Gilbertson OL 6'3" 284 lbs ** Wichita, KS
Jamie Tago (JUCO) DE 6'3" 250 lbs ** American Samoa
Troy James DE 6'4" 275 lbs *** Baton Rouge, LA
Kyron Johnson LB 6'1" 188 lbs *** Arlington, TX
Jay Dineen LB 6'2" 215 lbs ** Lawrence, KS
Michael Lee CB 5'10" 165 lbs **** New Orleans, LA
Robert Topps CB 6'2" 180 lbs *** Chicago, IL
Akayleb Evans CB 6'1" 175 lbs *** Mckinney, TX

That makes 12 commits so far for 2017.  Remember, these are only verbal commits but it's shaping up to be a solid class, especially considering the current state of the program.  I'm pretty happy with the way Beaty is going in recruiting right now, and if the Jayhawks can get a couple more linemen on both sides of the ball, I'll really like the makeup of this class.
