Kansas finished the 2015 season as NCAA semifinalists and will begin their quest back to the Final Four when facing Samford on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Central at Horejsi Family Athletics Center. Northern Iowa and Creighton – both 2016 KU opponents – will face on Thursday at 4 p.m. Central. Winners of the Thursday matches will play on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Central for a spot in the round of 16.
Texas (22-4, 14-2), which finished second to Kansas in the Big 12 standings, was seeded No. 4 overall, which means that if it wins its first two matches it will the be host school for the regional in which the Jayhawks are competing.
The school went ahead and put in a bid to the NCAA with Allen Fieldhouse, but to host, it would need NCAA waivers for three items: The volleyball teams’ practice times would have to be moved up before the men’s basketball game; the game time would have to be moved back to around 9 p.m., following the basketball game; and the NCAA would have to waive the requirement to have the official floor that is used at regional sites, since there wouldn’t be time to put it down following the basketball game.
Did Texas' reputation play into the committee's decision? The Longhorns have won two NCAA titles, most recently in 2012, and have made the final four in seven of the past eight years. The bottom line is Kansas won the Big 12, and that still wasn't enough to be seeded ahead of Texas.
"I think the NBA is missing the boat on him," said KU coach Bill Self, who welcomes pro scouts to practice regularly. "He doesn't fit the eye test with length and standing height, that kind of stuff. He has some things you can't teach — intangibles that are as good as anybody in America probably possess."
Whether that means asking Jackson to post up smaller players on offense or rebound with the big boys on defense, one key reality has kept Self from getting too carried away with Jackson six games in to the season.
No. 5/6 Kansas (5-1) plays its second of a six-game home stand when it hosts Long Beach State (1-7) Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m.
“The foundation work that they’ve done is very difficult and the rewards have not been very high,” Beaty said of what the seniors meant to the program, praising them for their perseverance and resilience. “I think it’s gonna serve them well in their life, because they continue to fight and continue to move forward.”
Kansas women's basketball overcame a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to claim its second overtime victory of the season, after completing the comeback over North Dakota, 76-71, on Sunday afternoon in Allen Fieldhouse.

Leading by six with eight minutes left in the second half, the Terps coughed up the lead with four minutes to go, and trailed by as many as four. But Melo Trimble wouldn't let his team go away, and willed them to a title-game victory. He finished with 18 points -- including six in the final two minutes.
In a clear “mic drop” moment, he didn’t hold back when asked about the pressures Charlie Strong repeatedly references in his tenure as head coach of the Longhorns.
