How to Watch Late Night in the Phog 2016 and Open Thread

The official beginning of basketball season is here!

NCAA Basketball: Kansas-Late Night at the Phog Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

The 32nd annual Late Night in the Phog begins tonight at approximately 6:30 PM and is expected to run until about 9:30 PM.

How to Watch

The festivities are being broadcast on Time Warner Cable and the Jayhawk TV Network, including online streaming on ESPN3. (I’m guessing blackout restrictions in the state of Kansas and the Kansas City metro will apply, but I don’t know.)

As always, admission is free and it is a first-come, first-served, ticketless event.

This year, a new feature adjacent to Allen Fieldhouse will be open to the public - the DeBruce Center opened last month, and will be many fans’ first opportunity to view the original rules of basketball as penned by Dr. James Naismith.

Student doors open at 5 PM and the general public doors open at 5:30 PM. Kansas Athletics will consider opening the entrances earlier if warranted by a large enough crowd.

Late Night is also a HUGE recruiting event for Bill Self and the Jayhawks. The following is a list of prospects who said they would be in attendance (ranking from Rivals):

POS NAME STATE RANK CLASS
PG Trevon Duval FL 3 2017
PG Collin Sexton GA 7 2017

* Verbally committed to Kansas.

In addition, Brandon Schneider and the women's hoops team have a big night of recruiting, including two top-10 recruits.  Per Jesse Newell:

POS NAME STATE RANK CLASS
Guard Chennedy Carer TX 6 2017
Wing Rennia Davis FL 9 2017
Wing Michala Wilson LA 51 2017
Wing Kayla Wells TX 76 2017
Post * Bailey Helgren MN 95 2017
Post Joanna Grymek KS #1 JuCo 2017

* Verbally committed to Kansas.

The women's team already has two transfers in from last year that were both highly rated recruits.  From Newell's article:

Jessica Washington, who came from North Carolina, was ranked 14th in her class by HoopGurlz and is the first McDonald's All-American on the KU women's team since Lauren Ervin in 2003. Southern California transfer McKenzie Calvert also was HoopGurlz's 15th-best player.

Both guards are eligible to play this season for KU after sitting out in 2015-16.

It should be a fun night in Allen Fieldhouse tonight.  If you can't be there, hopefully you can tune in!
