“We were a little disappointed in how we competed and tried against them. I hadn’t seen our team do that all year. I think the players agreed the same thing. I think they agreed they didn’t try as hard as they need to,” KU assistant coach Kurtis Townsend said on Wednesday’s weekly “Hawk Talk” radio show, subbing for coach Bill Self, who was out recruiting.
As both Bill Self and Landen Lucas explained in the postgame, nobody expected the Jayhawks to go undefeated in Big 12 play this season. So it's not the loss that's alarming. What is a concern, however, is how it happened. KU was straight punked by a West Virginia team that looked like it didn't just think but knew it was better than the Jayhawks and the Kansas players did nothing to change their minds. The team lacked energy, effort, intensity and even heart and common sense at times.
Even with all of the talk this offseason about new rules to emphasize safety in these types of situations, not a thing was said about it. There was no announcement by the public address announcer encouraging fans to stay off the floor. Ushers did not position themselves in a way that might discourage the fans from storming the floor. In fact, the only evidence I saw of any preparation for the inevitable was a quartet of event staff members preparing to protect ESPN broadcasters Fran Fraschilla and Brent Musberger and KU coach Bill Self himself waving his players off the floor before time had even expired.
“It was fool’s gold. We were up 13-9 and hadn’t thrown it inside but once,” KU coach Bill Self said.
Kansas' front court has six players deserving of minutes on any high-major team. There are only two spots on the floor for them. It's a mix that includes four veterans who average 4.5 years of Division I experience between them. There are also two freshmen who arrived at the program more highly touted than any of their elders.
The second session of Kansas University's spring football practices under head coach David Beaty is scheduled to begin in mid-March, with the annual spring game slated for a 1 p.m. kickoff on April 9.
Bad as the results might look, the truth is Kansas improved over the course of the season. Beaty and his coaches deserve credit for making sure their players didn't quit. They inherited an almost unprecedented numbers problem -- 67 scholarship players and 47 walk-ons on the roster -- and worked hard to make the best of a hard situation.
"Carlton is cool to be around. Everything about him is always positive. He's got a mindset that he is going to smile no matter what you say," Vick said of his teammate and friend.
The Longhorns held Kansas to its lowest-scoring game of the season and fewest made field goals (12).

The crowd was feeling the upset brewing and Jeffrey Carroll got off a 3-point attempt at the buzzer. The shot caromed off the backboard and then bounced out of the cylinder after a hard meeting with the front of the rim, resulting in the collective sigh of disappointment in Stillwater.
The violations occurred under former coach Frank Haith, who is now at Tulsa. But the NCAA has informed Haith that he is not, and won't be, personally charged with violations.
The ACC and American Athletic Conference voted against the compromise, which has been viewed as acceptable by the Big 12. Initially, the ACC and Big 12 wanted full deregulation of the rule, but there weren't enough votes to get it passed.
The NCAA announced on Wednesday that the NCAA has pushed back the date with which student-athletes must remove their name from the NBA Draft to 10 days after the final day of the NBA Combine, as well as announced that student-athletes may enter the draft multiple times without penalty.
