First-year head football coach David Beaty, assistant head coach/defensive coordinator Clint Bowen and offensive coordinator Rob Likens met with the media Tuesday to talk about the season opener against South Dakota State, Saturday, Sept. 5, at Memorial Stadium.
Just because the Jayhawks’ depth chart is not posted in the locker room or printed out on a piece of paper for the media to share does not mean it doesn’t exist. The coaches have a pretty good idea of how the first and second units look and Goodman said the players know where they stand, as well. The idea of not making it official, even with the season opener fast approaching, has more to do with the theme of earning everything they get that dominated the offseason.
“There’s always a guy that you’re not expecting, and then you go, ‘Wow’,” says offensive coordinator Rob Likens, who will debut his version of the Air Raid on Saturday. “He was one of our ‘Wow’ guys. We’re excited about him.”
“If you turn his high school film on, you kind of say: ‘How did guys miss on him?’” Kubiak says now. “But there are a lot of teams in that area picking guys up, and for whatever reason, he didn’t get picked up. It worked out for Kansas.”
“It will be tough. It will be long. I just have to stay focused, stick with it, keep working at it. Hopefully it’ll be good,” said the 6-foot-9, 230-pound Bahamas native, who announced plans to leave Oxford for Lawrence last spring.
“He can create pace better than any point guard we’ve ever had here, just because the dude, from rim to rim, he’s as good as I’ve seen,” Self said. Somewhere former Jayhawk point guard and all-time Big 12 assist leader Aaron Miles is shaking his head, but when it comes to evaluating talent, there is no reason to doubt the championship-winning coach.
Kansas defensive coordinator talked about where the defense is in his opinion and how many players will play on Saturday.
Rob Likens talks about the competition and how they will handle the back-up quarterback spot and much more as they prepare for South Dakota State.
Montell Cozart talks about what to expect from the offense and being more mature as a leader on offense.
Kansas freshman midfielder Parker Roberts was honored by the Big 12 Conference after she was named the Freshman Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Sophomore Lydia Saggau ran to her first collegiate victory and helped lead the Kansas women's cross country team to a win in its 2015 season debut Tuesday evening at the Bob Timmons Classic. The KU women saw five runners finish inside the top-seven in the meet held at Kansas' home course, Rim Rock Farm.
