2015 Spring Football - Cornerbacks

As we edge closer to the spring game on April 25th, let's take a look at what players remain, who has come on board, and who will coach the 2015 Jayhawk Cornerbacks.

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

The new look Jayhawks began spring practice on March 24th and the spring game is scheduled for April 25th. Today we will check out the new cornerbacks coach and see whose going defend opposing wideouts this season.

The cornerbacks are led this season by another new face in Co-Defensive Coordinator/Cornerbacks Coach Kenny Perry. Perry was a very important hire who brings 22 years of coaching experience and a significant network of Texas connections. TCU hired him in 2013 to be their recruiting coordinator and added the responsibilities of coaching the CB’s in 2014. Perry played (DB) and coached (DB/ST) at Houston before diving into the Texas HS football ranks.

This is where it hurts. The player with the most Division I experience at CB, Matthew Boateng (So.), played in 8 games last season (6 at CB, 2 on ST only) and was 19th on the team in total tackles. Look for Trinity Valley CC transfer Brandon Stewart to get a strong look at the position. He played in 12 games in 2014 and recorded 52 tackles and 19 PBUs. Since the beginning of spring practice Bowen has openly praised Stewart for his athleticism and ability. Depth will be an issue and I would not be surprised to see one of the six 2015 commitments (not mentioned herein) make significant impacts in the secondary before the end of the season.

Here is the current* CB roster:

*With transfers, early enrollees, and nearly 30 walk-ons this is an attempt to present a comprehensive list for spring practice. With all of the new faces in the program, and those to come over the summer, the roster will remain dynamic throughout the offseason.
