2015 Spring Football - Safeties

The new look Jayhawks began spring practice on March 24th and the spring game is scheduled for April 25th. Here's a peek at the new coaches and what is sure to be an ever evolving roster.

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

As we edge closer to the spring game on April 25th, let's take a look at what players remain, who has come on board, and who will coach the 2015 Jayhawks. With transfers, early enrollees, and nearly 30 walk-ons I'll do my best to present a comprehensive list. With all of the new faces in the program (and those to come over the summer) the roster is sure to remain dynamic throughout the offseason.

Today let's take a look at the safety position. To the surprise of many, Clint Bowen stayed on when HCDB was hired. Bowen currently serves as the Jayhawks Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator/Safeties Coach and, in tandem with Kenny Perry (Cornerbacks Coach), will lead the defense from back to front this season. They look to replace all four secondary starters from last season. No one knows this program better than Bowen who has spent 21 years as a player and coach for the Crimson and Blue.

Experience will be a concern with the safeties this season. Three players have combined for a total of 12 starts entering the year. Tevin Shaw (Jr.) had eight starts at NB last season but played in all 12 games. Fish Smithson (Jr.) saw action in all 12 games last season and really made his presence known towards the end of the season. I expect transfer Bazie Bates (Trinity Valley CC) to have an instant impact on competition at the position. There was plenty of rotation at the position early in camp, it will be very interesting to see who emerges with the starting roles.
