Kansas Volleyball finishes second in Big 12, awaits Tournament seeding

KU will play in its fourth consecutive NCAA tournament, a program record.

The Jayhawks capped off an incredible season by pasting Texas Tech on Senior Day in Lawrence, 3-0 (25-19, 25-9, 25-23), and claimed sole possession of second place in the Big 12 Volleyball standings.

Team Conf Overall Rank RPI
Texas 15-1 25-2 3 1
Kansas 14-2 26-2 9 8
Iowa St 11-5 18-10 NR 23
TCU 9-7 19-9 NR 46
Kansas St 9-7 17-11 NR 44
Oklahoma 6-10 12-16 NR 59
Baylor 5-11 17-13 NR 49
Texas Tech 3-13 14-16 NR 170
West Virginia 0-16 5-24 NR 178

According to this bracketologist, Texas, Kansas, Iowa State, TCU, and K-State will all make the NCAA Tournament field.  In the most recent top 25 poll, dated Nov 23, no other Big 12 teams outside of KU and Texas were receiving votes.  TCU handed Texas its one conference loss on the year.

Back in August, I offered up this prediction:

The preseason polls predict KU to finish fourth behind Texas, Iowa State, and Oklahoma.  However - call me a homer - I think the Jayhawks will finish in sole possession of second place behind Texas this fall, in the process earning a national seed and hosting the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament once again.

#NailedIt.  Honestly, though, I didn't think the Jayhawks would be THIS good.  KU played only one five-set match all year, against Texas, and could easily be 15-1 in conference with a tie for first place.  When they play their A-game, KU can run with the big dogs.

I'm looking for the Jayhawks to make a run this year.  Anything less than a Sweet 16 berth would be an upset and disappointing.  However, make it that far, and we're playing with house money.  This team features a core of seven sophomores - they're gonna be really good for several more years.  The Final Four is in Omaha this year - a nice, short trip from the Lawrence/KC area.

Let's make the drive.

The NCAA Volleyball Tournament selection show is tonight, Nov 29, at 8 PM Jayhawk time on ESPNU.
