Iowa State came into the game fired up and ready to play - maybe a little too fired up. ISU missed many of their first few shots long, and Kansas took early 8-3 and 10-5 leads. ISU calmed down and finally took a 19-18 lead at the 8:15 mark of the first half. The Cyclones would lead the rest of the half and take a 36-33 lead to halftime.
That lead quickly ballooned to 46-37 by the first media timeout of the second half. The Jayhawks would make a couple of runs at ISU but would never completely close the gap. After falling behind 72-58 at the 5:19 mark of the second half, KU closed to 82-79 with 30 seconds left. However, the Jayhawks could not complete the comeback, and ISU prevailed by the final of 86-81.
Frank Mason led the Jayhawks with 21 points on 8/14 shooting, including 3/4 from 3-pt land. Perry Ellis added 19 on 7/14 shooting.
Kansas outrebounded Iowa State by a 44 to 33 margin. Ellis led the way with 11 boards while Kelly Oubre chipped in 8 more.
The Jayhawks shot 9/23 (39%) from behind the arc compared to ISU's 9/20 (45%). KU went 8/10 from the free throw line while Iowa State shot 15/26.
Up next for Kansas, the Jayhawks have a quick turnaround as the return to Allen Fieldhouse to host Oklahoma on Big Monday at 8 PM Kansas time.
