That was an interesting way to start the season. 24-0 in the first quarter? 24 points in one quarter! A shutout! Reaganomics!
At the end of the first quarter, I felt as confident about Kansas football as I've felt in five years. The offense started out on fire, averaging over 9 yards per play in the first quarter. The defense was performing on a similar level, allowing 18 yards on 15 plays and not giving up a first down until 5 minutes into the 2nd quarter. Reaganomics!
And then it felt like we hopped in the DeLorean for the next 3 quarters. Neither team could muster much of an offense in the 2nd quarter leaving the Jayhawks up big but not quite as confident at halftime. And I really don't know what to think of the rest of the game. SEMO did outscore us 28-10 in the second half. They gained a total 223 yards in the 4th quarter on three straight drives. That's not ideal even if the backups are on the field.
It's tough to spin this into a positive but it's also going to take some convincing to make me believe we saw Reagan's best tonight. Why show your best when a win is secured and expectations won't change whether you win by 6 or 36? Same thing goes for the defense, why not get some other guys experience and ensure the starters make it to next weekend's game?
What do we think? First quarter was one of the best quarters of the Charlie Weis era. The rest of game matched the rest of the Charlie Weis era. Surely it was just a little rope-a-dope.
