Kansas traveled to Duke on Saturday and it was the first chance for us to see what kind of combos KU will wear on the road this year. With Duke’s school colors being blue and white (and black), it probably surprised no one when KU tried to incorporate as much red as possible into the uniform set. As it turned out, KU could’ve been wearing clown costumes and they still would have looked better than they played. Anyway, on to the uniform analysis.
The Best Feature
The helmet again. That angry Jayhawk is pretty sweet and looks good with the red pants. The team wore the same red/white/red combo last season when KU traveled to TCU, so it’s not a brand new look like last weekend, but to me, it’s not a look that works for KU. Too much red in the uniforms still takes some time to get used to. That being said, the new helmet logo improves things.
The Worst Feature
Even though I am opposed to KU wearing this much red, the worst feature of this particular combination is the blue numbers on the white shirt. I just don’t think that this lone blue feature looks good with all the red.
Overall Grade: C, the larger logo raises this from last year’s C-
How’d the Teams Look Together?
Well, there was contrast, I’ll say that. Duke came out in mono-blue with white stripes, numbers and logos. I would have preferred that Duke have a double stripe on their helmets to match the double stripes elsewhere, but at least there was never any confusion as to which team was which. But, I have to feel that the overall aesthetics of the game could have been improved if Duke wore white pants.
Now let’s take a look to see how I did when I predicted this in the 2014 uniform preview column. Here’s what I said:
Prediction: Red/White/Red
Preference: Red/White/Blue
Two weeks in a row! I honestly didn’t think I’d make any correct predictions, but so far, the record is perfect. Again, three points is given for a correct prediction and one point is handed out for my preference coming to fruition. Here are my "standings" so far with the bold being the correct pick.
