Late this morning, Bovada Sportsbook released odds for the replacement of fired Michigan Coach Brady Hoke, and the overwhelming favorite was none other than current San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh. The full odds list is as follows:
Candidate Name | Odds | Current/Recent Coaching Position(s) |
Jim Harbaugh | 2:1 | San Francisco 49ers |
Les Miles | 5:2 | LSU Tigers |
Butch Jones | 7:2 | Tennessee Volunteers |
Mike Gundy | 7:2 | Oklahoma State Cowboys |
Greg Schiano | 9:2 | Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Rutgers Scarlet Knights |
So what does all of this mean for Kansas? It depends on whether you thought Harbaugh was a realistic candidate for the Kansas job. At the very least, Kansas was an intriguing potential landing spot for Harbaugh, with his family ties to the area.
But thinking that Harbaugh was a realistic candidate for the job was probably nothing more than a pipe-dream, and these odds drive that point home. Harbaugh has much more personal ties to Michigan, and he has more recent ties to the Bay area, so Oakland also makes sense if Harbaugh stays in the NFL.
Either way, Zenger probably wouldn't have been able to feel confident enough that the Jayhawks would get him to pass on other viable candidates while waiting for the NFL season to end.
Too bad too. It would have been nice to see him in the Crimson and Blue. He could give a lot more speeches to the basketball team from so close too.
