Big XII Conference Recap- Week 8

Kansas traveled to Texas Tech yesterday, and if you need more insight into that contest, RCT has you covered. As for the rest of the Big XII, here’s a quick recap of all the games.

#14 Kansas State 31, #11 Oklahoma 30

Preseason All-Big 12 kicker Michael Hunnicutt missed a 19-yard field goal that would’ve given Oklahoma the lead late against K-State. The Wildcats retained possession for the rest of the game and OU never got a chance to win the game. Of course, the blame always gets heaped on the kicker in situations like this, but with two misses and a blocked PAT, Hunnicutt is probably a worthy scapegoat. Hunnicutt’s teammates and coaches immediately backed the senior kicker, and his misses should diminish what was an exciting back and forth affair. K-State had four leads that were equaled or tied up by the Sooners, but the fifth proved to be the game winner. The Wildcats host Texas next weekend while OU has the week off before playing Iowa State in two weeks.

West Virginia 41, #4 Baylor 27

Baylor racked up a total of 18 penalties for a Big 12 record 215 yards in their loss away to West Virginia. To compound the problems for the Bears, Mountaineers QB Clint Trickett was up to his normal tricks going 23 of 35 through the air for 322 yards and three touchdowns. The two most important came in the fourth quarter which was tied at the onset. A 12-yard pass to Kevin White gave West Virginia the lead with 11:36 to go, and a 39-yard strike to Mario Alford with seven and a half minutes left on the clock sealed the deal. West Virginia travels to Stillwater next weekend to take on the Cowboys. Baylor has the week off before hosting KU.

# 12 TCU 42, #15 Oklahoma State 7

TCU got back on track after dramatically losing to Baylor last weekend with an easy win over Oklahoma State. The Horned Frogs has 676 yards in total offense including 410 passing yards from Trevone Boykin. After sneaking out a win away to Kansas last weekend, Oklahoma State tumbles all the way back down to earth with this loss. QB Daxx Garman failed to complete a pass in the second half of this laughable game. TCU hosts Texas Tech next week while OSU hosts West Virginia.

Texas 48, Iowa State 45

This was easily the most entertaining game that no one watched this weekend. I was hanging out with an Iowa State fan, so count me as the only person who is not an alum/fan of these schools that actually watched this thing. The coaches really played the last few minutes like it was a video game where your defense is awful so you just let the other team score as quick as possible in order to have more time for your offense. The problem for the Cyclones was that Texas was also playing like it was a video game. Texas scored the leading touchdown with 1:19 to go, but Iowa State came back and scored with 28 seconds to go. But, the Cyclones scored too fast and Texas marched down the field and kicked the game winning field goal with three seconds to go. Texas travels to Manhattan to take on K-State next week while ISU has the week off before traveling to Oklahoma.
