KU women in 1st at NCAA Outdoor |
The top-ranked Kansas University women’s track and field team is in first place after the first day of the NCAA Outdoor Championship, Wednesday at Hayward Field.

KU women are in first place in NCAA track championships -
But on Wednesday in Eugene, Ore., the No. 1-ranked Kansas women were in position to set the tone for a historic week. And after nearly six hours of events — including a handful of finals — the title picture was still… plenty cloudy.

In some cases, Stanley Redwine was trying to connect with history. In other cases, he was trying to create it.Kansas, the program of Jim Ryun and Wes Santee, has rich tradition in track and field, including NCAA Outdoor titles in 1959, 1960 and 1970. But that tradition had become distant when Redwine was hired to coach the Jayhawks 13 years ago, and much of it was confined to the men's side.

“We went to see Andrew and his entire family. We had a great talk,” Self said of a three-hour dinner at Wiggins’ house. “He’s really excited (to be a Jayhawk). His schedule is super-busy right now because he’s being pulled in all directions to do a lot of things. He’s been away from home basically two years (attending Huntington Prep in West Virginia). He’d like to spend some time at home. He’s been home a week.”
