The kicking game has been a bit of a heart burn at times over the past two seasons. Last year Alex Mueller was supposed to assume kicking responsibilities but ultimately Ron Doherty stepped up to assume both the place kicking and punting duties for Kansas this year. With Mueller electing to transfer following the regime change, Doherty will once again handle the kicking game for Kansas.
While it's hard to remember the positives on special teams, Doherty did provide some hope last season and that has earned him a spot on the Ray Guy watch list which awards college football's top punter. Consistency was the biggest issue for Doherty so he'll need to tighten things up a bit if he wants to contend, but as always preseason recognition is a nice tip of the cap for players who put in a great deal of work throughout the year.
