The fun continues and this time the Jayhawks are adding to the offensive line. Jayhawkslant.com is reporting that Mike Smithburg, an offensive guard for the NJCAA National Championship Iowa Western Reivers, has committed to Charlie Weis, Tim Grunhard and the Kansas Jayhawks. Smithburg marks the second offensive lineman to commit in as many days and the fifth junior college commitment this week for the Kansas Jayhawks.
Smithburg is a 6'3" 300 pound guard with offers from Illinois, South Florida and other mid level division one schools. The final two in the decision making process were the Illini and the Jayhawks with Kansas pulling down the commitment and continuing he momentum on the recruiting trail.
Smithburg is an Iowa native and will continue his career fairly close to home in the Big 12. This year Smithburg was named honorable mention NJCAA All American and was a key player in the Reivers title run. Smithburg is teammates with safety commit Isaiah Johnson and will sign with the Jayhawks this coming week with plans to report in January.
With the latest addition the Jayhawk offensive line will now add four big bodies including Jeremy Bloomfield, Zach Fondal, Ngala Fusimalohi and Smithburg. Smithburg will likely compete at center and/or guard. Fusimalohi will compete at guard, Fondal will compete at tackle and while a redshirt could be the initial step, Bloomfield will also factor into the tackle spot down the line.
Kansas still has a pair of big time junior college offers out and one highly recruited high school player in the mix as well. All three are tackles and Kansas could easily add one or two more before this is all said and done. The competition for the remaining three is stiff and the number of spots remaining is starting to dwindle, so it will be interesting to watch the chips fall in the coming weeks.
