Bill Self announced that freshman forward Zach Peters will leave the basketball team at the end of the fall semester due to health reasons. Peters committed to the Jayhawks early on during his high school career and was viewed as a strong prospect for the future on the interior. At 6'9", Peters had shown some positive things during the Jayhawks summer trip to Europe.
Since the start of the season Peters has been sidelined due to injury and recently was away from the team due to illness. As it turns out, that illness appears to be a battle with multiple concussions. For the Jayhawks, the loss means that they will be set with a frontline lineup featuring Jeff Withey, Perry Ellis, Jamari Traylor and Justin Wesley. Landon Lucas still appears to be in redshirt mode and while Peters loss is tough to swallow longterm, he wasn't necessarily going to be in the mix this year after the extended absence.
This does answer the scholarship question given Bill Self's recent comments regarding his continued recruitment for the 2013 class. With five already signed, Self has said he would like two more. That means that Kansas would need two more openings. One is now settled with Peters departure. The other could well be Ben McLemore if his stock continues to rise.
