With the sudden retirement of Kansas defensive coordinator Carl Torbush, Turner Gill has promoted cornerbacks coach Vic Shealy to the head role on the defensive side of the ball for the Kansas Jayhawks. Shealy will be joined by defensive line coach Buddy Wyatt who now holds the title of Co-Defensive Coordinator to go along with his duties on the defensive front.
Shealy has been in coaching since 1981 with stints at Air Force, UNLV and Richmond most recently. His last stint as a defensive coordinator was during the 2009 season at his Alma Mater of Richmond.
"Coach Shealy is a great fit for the defensive coordinator position, he has had phenomenal results with developing players as well as relating with them. This will provide our student-athletes with some continuity. Coach Shealy has experienced success playing a pressure style of defense with multiple looks. He truly understands how to defend the spread offense."
Wyatt started his coaching career following a playing career with the TCU Horned Frogs. Wyatt's career includes stops at Minnesota, Oklahoma State, Colorado, Texas A&M and Nebraska. Wyatt's entire career has been spent coaching the defensive line and this will be his first experience in a coordinator role.
