Kansas Jayhawk News and Notes 1.23.11

I've definitely felt worse after a loss. I think part of that might be the fact that Thomas Robinson lost a mother late Friday night unexpectedly and this just a few days after losing a grandfather and just a month ago a grandmother.  It puts things in perspective a bit.

Secondly, Texas is a good team.  Several of the analysts that I personally pay attention to picked the upset and we all knew that we'd take a ding at some point. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the only thing this really hurts is from the perspective of our Big 12 title hopes.  That streak sits at 6.  A share or outright takes it to 7 straight and I'd like to get there if possible.  We'll see how this team responds on Tuesday.  Boulder will be a difficult environment and this team has some improvement to make.

Another thing to put this in perspective.  We weren't expected to be where we are.  There were plenty ready to write Kansas off this year.  And yes we have shown a ceiling that is off the charts, but we still were expected to experience some amount of struggle this year. I know the expectations in Lawrence fluctuate very little, but it's just something to keep in perspective.  This is still a very good team, unfortunately I just don't think the non-conference schedule tested them the way it needed to and our guard play lacks consistency.

Elsewhere in Kansas sports today is the end of a weekend where Turner Gill and his staff hosted 6 uncommitted HS football players.  I'm thinking we might get some news today.  Early reviews were positive.

Texas Longhorns vs. Kansas Jayhawks - Recap - January 22, 2011 - ESPN
ESPN Recap from the loss. As Self said, it's one game. We were bound to lose, this one did have higher stakes to it so in that sense it's a blow. That said, I'd rather lose to a team that's worth a darn than a nobody.

KU's home streak ends at 69 | CJOnline.com
I would have liked to see this continue, but hey it's not hugely significant other than the fact that ESPN likes to show the chart. Allen Fieldhouse is and always will be a huge homecourt advantage streak or no streak.

I'm sensing a theme in the coverage of this game.

First sentence is an interesting way to look at this one and the streak in general.

NFL Playoffs: Bar plans to roast bear before NFC title game - ESPN Chicago
This is how you take it to another level. EATING a Bear because you're playing the Bears. Damn! Anyone know what Bear tastes like? I'm imagining it tastes like Brut cologne smells.
