Many Kansas fans will remember Gilbert "the gravedigger" Brown. Brown was a defensive tackle for the Jayhawks in the early 90's and would go on to be one of the premier run stuffing nose tackles in the NFL during his time with the Green Bay Packers. Well on Saturday, Jamal Brown was on campus checking out his dads old stomping grounds, meeting the staff, other recruits and getting a closer look at Kansas.
The younger Brown is a 6'2" 350 pound defensive tackle/offensive lineman prospect playing his high school ball in the Jayhawks backyard for Lawrence High. He is drawing interest from several of the area programs early, but hasn't had any early offers to date.
Following his junior day experience Brown talked with us here at RCT and had some great things to say about his experience. This isn't the first time I've talked to Brown and because of his positive attitude and great personality I do hope things work out for him with Kansas. An offer isn't certain at this point, but Brown knows a little about what he needs to do to make that happen and he seems excited about the opportunity to potentially earn a shot.

To start us off, just walk us through the day. What you did? who you met? what you liked about it? other recruits? coaches? anything that stood out.
Jamal
Okay, for me I just really loved what the coaches had to say, they were more about becoming a family instead of them being coaches and us being players. I also really liked that they are about making us into better men. The coaches are upfront with you, real with you, and they will not waste your time if they are not interested.
I met Reggie Mitchell and he is just a phenomenal person on and off the field. He is very very very helpful, and I am very interested in continuing the relationship that was started today.
I also loved the facilities! The locker room was my favorite, they got the players lounge, and they are one of only 12 schools to have a full-time nutritionist for the football team only. They help you with your weight management, getting faster, and getting stronger.
Overall It's just the fact that if you have a goal, whether its during college or in general life, they are going to give 110% if you want it bad enough! Its just an all around great program.
Denver
Good stuff. So in terms of your recruitment with Kansas, did you get an idea of what they are looking for from you in terms of extending an offer as a player?
Jamal
I think the biggest thing for me is, that I have to drop some weight, but after that is accomplished I obviously need to start taking the ACT, SAT, and get in to the NCAA Clearinghouse. Right now all I can do is improve during the off-season, drop weight, get faster and stronger, and leave it in God's hands!
Denver
Did the coaches talk to you at all about their evaluation process and how they will go about deciding who will receive an offer?
Jamal
Yes they did. They said that you need to send in film, after you do that and they think that the person is what they want or need, then they will offer. If they would like to see more of you and evaluate you further, then they would bring you into some summer camps.
If they don't like what they see, they are not going to sugar coat anything. They are not going to waste time on a prospect they do not have interest in. So if you get feedback then you're a wanted person, and that is another reason why I like this staff because they keep it 110% real with you
Denver
Do you have a sense of where they stand with you at this point?
Jamal
In a way, but not completely. I'm just going to stay on my toes, work hard and hope for the best!
Denver
Fair enough. Did you get a chance to meet any of the other recruits?
Jamal
Oh yeah! I got to meet Jordan Turner from Wichita, Phil Ford...there was a lot of guys I met today and had a great time with all of them.
Denver
So what's next on your agenda for recruiting?
Jamal
OU junior day probably, don't really know for sure yet, I really liked what I saw today though. I am for sure going to the Under Armour Combine and a KU camp this summer, so that's about all I know right now.
Denver
Expecting a Kansas offer do you think?
or any other offers for that matter?
Jamal
I really do think I am. I have also been talking to Nebraska and K-State, so I guess we shall see!
Denver
If Kansas offered, how would you feel about that?
Jamal
I would feel accomplished. There are guys out there every year good enough to play Division 1 football but never make it. So I would be ready to go to work as a Jayhawk and take on all the responsibilities as a D1 Student Athlete!
Denver
sounds good, well appreciate you talking tonight, glad things went well and hopefully things work out for the best regardless of where you find a fit in the future.
Jamal
Thank you very much!
