(I am Definitely Not Doing) A (semi) Statistical Review of Kansas State

Normally in this space I would take a look back at how the Jayhawks did according to Denver's keys to the game. However, since saying we didn't do well 5 times doesn't seem like a lot of fun, instead I decided to look at the first six games of the Turner Gill era and examine how they stack up to the first six games of other KU coaches (which admittedly doesn't sound like too much fun either.)

note: I couldn't find any turnover numbers for the older seasons. (If anyone knows where to get them feel free to let me know), but it appears we'll only have W-L and point differential to compare Gill to previous coaches. But just for fun (or not) I added how they did against K State.

Turner Gill:

W-L record: 2-4

Point differential: -89

Takeaways: 2

Giveaways: 8

Penalties per game: 5.17

Penalty yards per game: 43.33

vs: K-State: Don't make me type it out

Mark Mangino:

W-L Record: 2-4

Point differential: -49

vs. K State: L 0-64

Terry Allen

W-L Record: 4-2

Point differential: +5

vs. K State: L 16-48

Glen Mason

W-L record: 0-6

Point differential: -171

vs. K State: W 30-12

Bob Valesente

W-L Record: 3-3

Point differential: -11

vs. K State: L 12-29

Mike Gottfried

W-L Record: 3-2-1

Point differential: +79

vs. K State: W 31-3

Don Fambrough

W-L Record: 2-4

Point differential: -69

vs. K State: W 36-28

Bud Moore

W-L Record: 4-2

Point differential: +49

vs. K State: W 28-0

Don Fambrough (Again)

W-L Record: 3-3

Point differential: -14

vs. K State: W 39-13

Pepper Rodgers

W-L Record: 3-3

Point differential: +16

vs. K State: W 17-16

I'm going to end there just because of how cool of a name Pepper Rodgers is. So Gill hasn't had the worst debut in KU football's recent history, but it hasn't been great. There's no denying the team seems to lack fire and intensity when they play, though perhaps one unfair point of criticism has been the penalties, as KU's opponents have been penalized more and for more yards than the Jayhawks have.

Regardless of talent coming in the next couple of years, there is no doubt we will have to see a fast turnaround in order for Coach Gill to retain his job.
