Kansas scored two runs in the bottom of the tenth inning to defeat #20 Oklahoma State 4-3.  The win gave Kansas a series sweep and improved their Big-12 record to 7-5, good for a tie for fourth place in the conference.

The entire game was played under conditions reminiscent of a winter in Scotland.  Cold, windy with drizzling rain only broken up by the occasional steady downpour.  There never was quite enough rain to stop the game but the cumulative effect drove all but the most devoted fans out of Hoglund early in the contest.

For most of the day the game was a pitching duel.  Kansas took a 2-1 lead in the 3rd inning on a two run Buck Afenir double.  Oklahoma State tied the game in the top of the seventh and the teams went into extra innings at 2-2.  OSU got to Brett Bochy (1-0) in his third inning of work and took a 3-2 lead in the top of the tenth but their closer, Randy McCurry, ran out of gas in the bottom of the inning.  After getting Jason Brunansky to line out to shortstop McCurry gave up a blop single to David Narodowski, walked Robby Price and hit Brian Heere with a pitch to load the bases with one out.  A bases loaded walk to Buck Afenir tied up the game at three.  The next batter, Tony Thompson, drove a pitch off he left field wall to bring home the winning run.  KU’s abuse of the Cowboy bullpen throughout the weekend might have forced the visitors to stick with McCurry longer than they would have liked.  The OSU closer ended up throwing 3.1 innings in a losing effort.

Buck Afenir’s three RBIs made him the clear offensive hero today.  Tony Thompson went 2-5 with the game winning RBI.  David Narodowski also went 2-5.  Lee Ridenhour was the KU starting pitcher.  Despite being under the weather he gutted out five innings of effective work and put the team in a great position to get a win.  Ridenhour gave up seven hits and one run.  He walked one and struck out four.

Kansas is back in action on Tuesday as the Jayhawks visit Creighton.  The game will be televised by CBS College Sports (Sunflower 143)  First pitch at 6:30PM.
