Kansas finishes off Northern Colorado 15-6, sweeps two game series.

Yesterday it took Kansas nine innings to beat Northern Colorado.  Today the Jayhawks got the job done more quickly.  Kansas built a 10-2 lead in the first three innings and cruised to a 15-6 victory.  Brett Bollman overcame a shaky first inning to have a very solid outing and move to 3-0 on the season.  Bollman gave up a two run homerun to the second batter he faced, NC centerfielder Jarod Berggren.  A walk and a single later and the Bears, already up 2-0, had runners on the corners with no men out in the top of the first.  After a visit from Coach Graves Bollman settled down to strike out the next two batters and get out of the inning with no further damage.   Kansas responded in the bottom of the inning with five runs.  Northern Colorado starter Cameron Tallman was chased from the mound after recording only one out.  Kansas never looked back.  Bollman kept the Bears off the scoreboard for the next five innings before turning a 14-2 lead over to the bullpen in the top of the seventh inning.

Kansas improved to 17-10 on the year and 14-0 at Hoglund.  This home winning streak is really getting impressive.  The Hog is a well protected domicile.  Northern Colorado fell to 8-17.  Kansas now owns a 5-4 lead in the all time series between these two teams.  Kansas is back in action Friday when the Jayhawks host #7 Baylor for the first of three games.  First pitch 6PM.

Additional game notes, link to KU recap and box score after the jump.

Every position player on the KU roster saw action today except Jake Marasco who apparently is nursing a foot injury sustained in Tuesday’s game.  James Stanfield played third base for the final four innings.  It was Stanfield’s first playing time at the hot corner and it did not go very well.  James failed to convert his first two opportunities but partially redeemed himself by starting a 5 unassisted - 3 double play in the 9th inning.  Brett Lisher played four innings at first base and Zac Elgie played left field for three innings.

Northern Colorado is a good hitting team so Brett Bollman’s start deserves notice.  Bollman went six innings, gave up six hits, one walk and struck out seven batters.  One of his two runs was earned.  Bollman worked the corners of the strike zone well late in his day.  Kelson Boyer pitched the seventh and eighth innings and got hit around a bit, giving up three hits and three runs (one earned).  Thomas Marcin pitched the final frame giving up two walks and a single resulting in one run.

Greg Herbst played all nine innings, albeit at DH.  Herbst had a great day, going 3-4 and scoring three runs.  I would have liked to see Herbst get some more innings at third base.  He looked very good there last Tuesday.  David Narodowski continued to hit, going 2-6 with two RBIs.  Buck Afenir feasted today.  The KU catcher went 2-2 with 5 RBIs.  Tony Thompson drove in four runs going 1-2 with a walk.

It was a cold overcast and breezy day at Hoglund.  Not ideal baseball watching weather again.  Same story, different game.  Hopefully sunny spring will arrive in Kansas soon.  About 300 fans showed up to watch the game.
