Shaeffer Hall, KU's Jr. left handed starter, opened the 2009 season by tossing a no-hitter against Air Force. The Jayhawks won the game 5-0. Hall walked three batters and hit one while throwing 102 total pitches. This is the seventh no-hitter in KU's 130 year baseball history. David Hicks was the last KU individual pitcher to toss a no-hitter back in 1980. Five pitchers combined in a no-hitter vs. Texas Southern in 2004. Hall went 4-2 last year for the Hawks. This was his first opening day start. Jimmy Waters, Tony Thompson, Joe Lincoln, Preston Land and Jake Marasco all collected RBI's in a balanced KU attack. Hall nursed a 1-0 lead through six innings before KU broke the contest open scoring three in the top of the seventh. photo via tbn0.google.com |
Update: Paul Smyth gave up three runs in the bottom of the ninth in the second game vs. Memphis and the Jayhawks went down 5-4. This wasted a nice start by T.J. Walz. KU plays two more games this weekend vs. Bradley (Saturday 1PM and Sunday 10AM).
