Countdown Recap
- #10 Toben Opurum vs. Southern Miss.
- #9 Kerry Meier vs. Missouri
- #8 Jake Sharp vs. UTEP
- #7 Offensive Line vs. Nebraska
- #6 Kerry Meier vs. Southern Miss.
Once again the #5 performance for the 2009 Jayhawks comes from one Kerry Meier. The Iowa State Cyclones and Kansas Jayhawks met to kick off conference play and the Kansas big three of Todd Reesing, Kerry Meier and Dezmon Briscoe would kick off the season with a bang.
All three would perform very well against the Cyclones but Meier would catch 16 passes for 142 yards and two scores.
Meier's first touchdown would come late in the 2nd quarter when Reesing would connect with Meier on a short 3 yard touchdown pass. Overall much of Meier's work in this one was done on short routes which seems to be his specialty. Finding the hole in the defense, giving his QB a target and moving the chains has always been Meier's bread and butter.
Meier's second trip to the endzone would prove to be the difference in the game as Meier would once again catch a short 6 yard touchdown from Reesing to put the Jayhawks ahead 11, a deficit the Cyclones would not overcome.
3 appearances on the countdown so far for Meier in his senior season. With Meier the games don't always explode of the page at you, but his workman like performances consistently prove important to a Jayhawk win. Meier would also set a Kansas single game record for receptions, breaking his own Insight Bowl record from a year ago.
Hat's off to Meier, it's no secret that he'll be missed by Jayhawk fans everywhere.
