KU's starting staff had a horrible week in Florida. In the six games the starters compiled a 9.44 ERA. Particularly troubling were the rough outings by Wally Marciel and Nick Czyz, the Friday and Saturday starters last week in Texas. Marciel has had back to back poor outings.
The only clear positive development this weekend was the brilliant start by T.J. Walz on Friday. True, he was facing a lower tier opponent (Maryland - Baltimore Co.) but I doubt anyone would have predicted he would have pitched so effectively into the 7th inning. Andres Esquibel's outing cannot be called a good one, but it was good enough to earn a win and give the bullpen a bit of rest. Esquibel went eight innings and 110 pitches to beat Dartmouth. Esquibel is a bull. Garcia looked good for three innings vs. Central Connecticut State but then ran into trouble, only partially of his own creating. Of the next 11 batters he faced he gave up a single, two doubles, a walk, committed two balks and uncorked a wild pitch. He was also let down by two errors behind him.
Shaeffer Hall was knocked around badly by Illinois. He has now given up four homeruns in his last two starts. The starting pitching ERA climbed over a run in six games.
