KU Baseball Update - Batting

As the Jayhawks drove into their conference schedule their batting averages have fallen. Big-12 pitching staffs are among the best in NCAA baseball and so this can only be expected.

Bucking the trend during these last three weeks John Allman finally found his home run stroke and blasted his first three of the year. Kyle Murphy showed no signs of slowing down and is well on his way to building one of the more impressive seasons for a Jayhawk leadoff hitter. Murphy's .394 on base percentage and 12 steals (in 13 attempts) make him perfectly suited to fill this role. Ryne Price, Erik Morrison, Justin Ellrich and Joe Servais suffered through a collective slump. Preston Land continued to be unable to break out of what now amounts to a season long funk. Casey Larson, in limited playing time, might have held the hottest bat during the last few weeks.

One area that scouts frequently look at when evaluating players is their strikeout to walk ratio. Anything lower than 1.5 to 1 is considered an indication of good plate disipline. Here are how a few of the Jayhawks breakdown in this area.

Allman 21/24 (0.875)
Larson 15/11 (1.363)
Simpson 31/21 (1.476)
