Baseball RPI update: How is KU doing?

RPI rankings became much more legitimate this week. Kansas came out very well. The Jayhawks rose from #167 to #126 despite losing two of three at Texas. The reasons for this rise are three-fold. First off, KU winning one of three in Austin was probably a slightly better performance than expected. Secondly, by playing Texas the Jayhawks inherited all of Texas' former opponents once removed into their own RPI rankings. The RPI is one part the team's own record + one part their opponent's record + two parts their opponent's opponents record. So playing Texas brought in a rich RPI heritage. Finally, KU's former opponents have been playing well lately. Vanderbilt, Missouri State, Iowa, LeMoyne and North Dakota State all had excellent weeks.

Here are the Big-12 standings as of Monday morning. I have their RPI ranking first, their D-I record second, and their conference ranking last. In general, if Kansas is going to receive serious consideration for an NCAA at-large bid at the end of the year they will need to have posted roughly 40 D-I victories, win at least 13 Big-12 games, and have their RPI in the top-50.

RPI
ranking
Team NCAA D-I
record
Big-12
record
9 OSU 11-5 1-2
12 Missouri 13-2 0-0
19 Nebraksa 13-2 3-0
31 Baylor 13-4 2-1
46 Texas 12-5 2-1
47 Oklahoma 15-5 0-0
61 Texas A&M 15-4 2-1
78 Texas Tech 9-8 1-2
83 Kansas State 7-9 0-3
126 Kansas 10-7 1-2

Tracking KU's out of conference opponents - Wins over Missouri State (68), Iowa (150), LeMoyne (192), Xavier (249) and three over NDSU (195). Loses to Vanderbilt (38) and Arkansas (54). Lost a series 3-2 at Hawaii-Hilo (189). Only the UHH series really hurts at this point.

Conference RPI rankings
Now that about a month of baseball has been played the current RPI rankings are somewhat useful. Here is how the conference's break down so far this season. Information from Boyd's World, which is a great college baseball site:

20 0.463 25 42 26 43 Ivy
21 0.461 63 110 66 111 MAC
22 0.461 55 73 57 74 Big South
23 0.460 34 59 38 61 Summit
24 0.444 62 73 67 77 OVC
25 0.442 37 66 38 69 MAAC
26 0.435 58 86 67 91 Independents
27 0.426 28 48 28 48 America East
28 0.414 35 45 36 46 Patriot
29 0.413 43 69 60 80 SWAC
30 0.407 15 66 15 67 NEC
31 0.387 22 74 28 75 MEAC

A few observations. First off, the Big West and the WCC are both ranked on par with the SEC. Do you agree?

The SEC gets much more love than the Big-12 from the national media.  The numbers just do not bear out this favoritism.

The Big-10's "coming out party" has been a big flop so far.

Why is the MVC struggling so mightily? What can be done to prop up the second half of that conference?

Louisville's collapse has sunk the Big East deep in the rankings. Right now they look to be a non-competitive conference.
