Open Game Thread : Game #18 : #3 Kansas (17-0) @ Missouri (11-6)

Wow.

Procrastination has killed what would have been one of my better posts, if I ever actually got around to doing it, matching up the four best teams in the country (UNC, Memphis, Kansas and UCLA) and using statistics to determine who is "really" the #1 team in the country. I will still do it, hopefully tomorrow, at the very least breaking down the two candidates for #1 now (Kansas and Memphis, assuming we don't blow it against Mizzou just like UCLA and North Carolina did today), but it won't be nearly as debatable.

North Carolina hasn't looked impressive for awhile now, it finally came back to hurt them. And I called the UCLA loss, but wasn't exactly expecting a USC win or anything like that. If you know what I mean.

In any case, tonight's matchup has changed from simply a Border War contest against Missouri to an opportunity to showcase our argument to be the #1 team in the country. Because right now, we deserve to be ranked #1. Son.

...VERSUS...
Where: Mizzou Sports Arena
When: 7:00 PM Central Time
TV: ESPNU

Prediction: Kansas 82 Mizzou 63

My Thoughts
Hansborough= most overrated player in college hoops. You put a hand in his face but don't foul, he'll miss. Period. He's one of those players that makes things look more difficult than they are, which always seems to sucker announcers/media types into full-fledged love affairs.  Lawson, Ellington, and maybe even Thompson are better players for UNC.

As for tonight, a good solid effort should allow us to cruise to another easy victory. It's worth noting that we haven't even been challenged since Sherron got back up to full speed, despite playing some decent teams on the road.

The thing I love about this KU team is how Self seems to trust them more. They don't run nearly as many set plays as they have in the past, which I felt was a weakness exposed in the UCLA game last year.

Add in the improvement we've had in offensive post play, and it's easy to see why this team is having a better go of it than last year, despite losing Julian (I'm sure Misery fans still remember his performance the last time these teams played in Columbia).

agreed on all parts...
watching different games today, i realize how rare it is for us to actually "run a play".

we just have an offense and run it every time down, and it is nearly impossible to shut down all of the facets of it.

regarding hansbrough, i think the entire north carolina team is overrated. they are good, sure, probably a top 5 team, but are clearly worse than us, memphis and ucla IMO.

here is my top 5 right now...

  1. kansas
  2. memphis
  3. tennessee
  4. ucla
  5. north carolina
i am going to do a big 12 power rankings and my own top 25 tomorrow or monday, and try to make it a weekly thing.

just for those interested...

I was at a wedding during the game
The half-time score was announced by the bride after the dinner toasts.

This was a very fun wedding.  After handing the groom a printed copy of the fine print of her wedding vows for him to consult throughout the years the bride softened the blow by telling her husband that, to her, he would always be her "Captain Kirk."  Following the exchange of vows a Tom Jones impersonator sang "Without Love."
