KU/Canada- Ten Non-Statistical Takeaways

Scott Sewell-USA TODAY Sports

I know I'm a little late on this, but I went to that KU/Canada game on Friday and here are ten non-statistical takeaways:

1. I love the 24-second shot clock. I know that it doesn't inherently lead to more points (if you can't shoot, you can't shoot), but the pace of play is so much better.

2. Ten minute quarters need to happen. Forget the 1 and 1, and go straight to the 5 fouls per quarter with two free throws to follow after the fifth foul. Plus, after 10 minutes, the team fouls reset and you aren’t sitting there forever watching a foul shooting contest. It was pretty awesome. I expect it to happen in college basketball sooner rather than later.

3. When Svi, Graham, Greene, and Diallo come in, and Moore and DeBose leave, this team will be pretty interesting to watch. I think Graham is far better than Moore (maybe Moore knows that Self isn’t his coach and the wild shots he took are a part of that) in just about every way. I know it’s a small sample size, but if Devonte’ were out there, I think KU would've had better looks at the basket.

4. These games are going to do wonders for Bragg and Vick and presumably the guys that can’t play but are travelling with the team. Bragg offered some 15-foot jumpers that could stretch a defense. Vick looks like a prospect for the future, I’m not sure he’ll contribute with so many capable guards in front of him.

5. Selden looks different out there. He was more aggressive, like he wants to be a leader. I hope we’re getting the guy we thought we were getting two seasons ago.

6. Jamari looked good too. He still pulled quite a few "Jamari’s"- hustling like mad for a loose ball and then passing it to the other team- but if he can use his energy wisely, and we don’t have to depend on him for points, he could have a great senior season.

6. Perry could dominate college basketball. It will be good to go up against this kind of competition to see what he’ll need to do to get into the NBA or play in Europe. I hope it motivates him.

7. I love Frank Mason. That is all.

8. I wish Landen Lucas had better hands. It seems like he always has to take a dribble to resettle the ball in his hands. If you take that away, he’d obviously score more. He’s in a good position- maybe the best of any of our true bigs- but he wastes too much time going to the rim.

9. Having Mickelson in the program for four years would’ve been nice. I wonder what he’ll even contribute this season. He had an interesting stretch against Canada in the second half where he committed two fouls and went to the basket hard offensively on a few occasions.

10. It’s obviously difficult to predict in June without even seeing Diallo or Svi or Greene or Graham, but the rotation could easily look like this: Starters: Mason, Graham, Selden, Perry, Diallo. Impact Subs: Svi, Greene, Jamari, Bragg. Size: Lucas, Hunter. Speed: Vick. Of course, you could probably switch Graham and Svi or Jamari and Diallo and be all right.
