What's up with KU's Uniforms?

Lets talk some more about the aesthetics of KU football. Monday I asked your opinion of the turf in Memorial Stadium. Today I want to know what you think about KU's football uniforms. I think they can do better.

The uniform is something the players and fans alike take pride in. Unlike some other Big 12 schools KU doesn't have a traditional uniform that goes back decades. The Jayhawks have changed up color combinations often over the years. They've even changed the hue of blue from light blue, to navy, and currently back to the traditional royal blue. In 2013 they donned grey jerseys. The season before there were solid black jerseys and pants. With so much change (and dismal play) it's difficult to establish a national identity with the uniforms. Thankfully, they have one of the coolest and most unique mascots in the country to help fans and rivals identify who is on TV.

In 2013 Charlie Weis tried to bring the Jayhawks to present time by adding a number of helmet, jersey, and pant combinations. I think it was a good effort. It was an upgrade for sure and a bonus for recruits. Most fans I heard from thought the red helmet with the 1942 angry Jayhawk was bad ass. Weis also completely did away with lettering on the side of the helmet and used just a Jayhawk instead. There didn't seem to be too much else to get excited about. I couldn't figure out the point of the gray jerseys. Like the black ones from a couple years ago, I don't think we should get too far away from our school colors. It seems like the Adidas designers were copying what other schools had been doing for a few years. Like the Jayhawk the uniforms should be original.

Since the change over to the Trajan font several years ago I've thought the football uniforms have gotten more and more plain. One thing that hasn't changed in several years is the face mask. It's still gray regardless of the helmet color. Perhaps a white face mask would add some pop. Red or blue would be drastic but KU has had face masks like that before. I also hope they incorporate more crimson in the uniform schemes as it's been predominately blue and white for several seasons. The pants look good with the solid stripe but the jerseys look so basic that perhaps a total overhaul is needed.

So, what do you think of the current KU football uniforms? Let's get this KU style project runway show started.
