Jeff Goodman, Evan Daniels, etc. etc. etc. have all reported that Sophomore guard Conner Frankamp is going to transfer. Apparently, given the Andrew White transfer, outside shooting isn't needed and Frank Mason and Devonte Graham have taken his minutes in the Kansas backcourt.
Frankamp didn't get a ton of playing time in the regular season last year but shot 4-7 from three in the NCAA tournament loss to Stanford. He had an obscenely low turnover rate for a Kansas team that badly needed someone to take care of the ball (and probably will badly need it again).
Frankamp was going to be the best outside shooter for the Jayhawks this year and, due to his ability to take care of the ball, I maintained he would end up with the most minutes and point guard. Bill Self, though, loves his combo guards and Frank Mason shooting 50% at the rim and taking 15 minutes to get off a three pointer is apparently better than a guy who could shoot 40+%.
With this transfer, Kansas loses maybe the three best outside shooters off last season's team. I am not sure who the floor spacer will be. Wayne Selden should improve due to his knee, but he and Kelly Oubre will be much more focused on getting to the rim. Brannen Greene is another possibility, but he doesn't offer much other than shooting. A darkhorse candidate is Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk, who stands 6'6" and whose shooting ability is lauded.
Conner Frankamp probably wasn't going to be a main focus of the offense, but he would have gotten a lot of open threes and knocked them down but hey threes aren't important or anything. When reading about the transfer, I had an eerie feeling that Kansas will go 6-24 from three in a Sweet 16 upset this year. I hope I'm wrong.
