I kind of wondered if this would happen, and sure enough, it did. Mississippi State's win against Auburn was impressive enough for voters to move the Bulldogs into the top slot. Florida State dropped to #2 despite handling Syracuse easily.
With their third win in three weeks over a Top-10 team, Mississippi State has completed the fastest rise in the AP poll's 78-year history, becoming the first team to go from unranked to No. 1 in five weeks. The previous mark was six weeks by Ohio State in 1954.
Baylor managed to stay in the Top-5 while Auburn dropped four spots to #6. Southern Cal and Clemson both moved back into the rankings this week along with Marshall. The Thundering Herd, ranked for the first time this year, is still unbeaten and is the only team from outside the "power five" conferences to be ranked.
