A Trip Around the Big 12: Week 2

Jamie Squire

What a great first week of college basketball in the Big 12! Especially if you’re a Kansas fan, of course. Big Monday should live up to its name tonight, at least in the Big 12. I’m so excited to get to the standings that I can’t even think of a very good introduction, even though I know you guys (and gal(s?)) are wanting "more mikeville."

Despite that being the case, let’s dig right in!!

(AP Rankings as of today (1/13) are in parentheses. Where applicable, today’s rankings are used in last week’s scores. Yes I know that’s not how it’s supposed to be done. If there’s enough of an uproar I can do last week’s ranking with last week’s scores and this week’s ranking with this week’s scheduled games. That just seems like it would get confusing, but let me know if you feel strongly one way or the other.)

---

(15) Kansas, 11-4, 2-0

(8) Iowa State, 14-1, 2-1

(9) Oklahoma State, 14-2, 2-1

(25) Oklahoma, 13-3, 2-1

Kansas State, 12-4, 2-1

West Virginia, 10-6, 2-1

(12) Baylor, 13-2, 1-1

Texas, 12-4, 1-2

TCU, 9-6, 0-3

Texas Tech, 8-8, 0-3

---

We’re already starting to see some separation from the bottom of the conference, which if we’re honest, was expected. TCU and Texas Tech are going to have it rough. Does anything else about the early standings stick out to you? The Big 12 is deep this year, and so far, it’s showing in the top 8 teams. It’s also showing in nationwide recognition, as five teams are ranked and Kansas State is still receiving votes.

(15) Kansas, 11-4, 2-0

Last week: win @ (25) Oklahoma 90-83, win vs annihilation of Kansas State 86-60

This week: @ (8) Iowa State 1/13, vs (9) Oklahoma State 1/18

The Sooners tried to run with the Jayhawks and couldn’t quite keep up, and the Wildcats got overwhelmed in Allen Fieldhouse for the seventh straight year. KU seems to finally be hitting its stride and will look to start 4-0 in conference to grab a stranglehold in the race for the Big 12 title. Two top-10 teams await them this week.

(8) Iowa State, 14-1, 2-1

Last week: win vs (12) Baylor 87-72, loss @ (25) Oklahoma 87-82

This week: vs (15) Kansas 1/13, @ Texas 1/18

The Cyclones handled Baylor with their Hilton Magic, but fell on the road in Norman a few days later. Iowa State has had the Kansas game in Hilton circled since Elijah Johnson’s heroics last year. Will the Magic be enough this year?

(9) Oklahoma State, 14-2, 2-1

Last week: win vs Texas 87-74, win @ West Virginia 73-72

This week: vs TCU 1/15, @ (15) Kansas 1/18

The Cowboys responded from their conference opening loss by handling Texas and squeaking by WVU. They get one more tune-up before travelling to Lawrence for a big early-season showdown with Kansas on Saturday.

(25) Oklahoma, 13-3, 2-1

Last week: loss vs (15) Kansas 90-83, win vs (8) Iowa State 87-82

This week: @ Kansas State 1/14, @ (12) Baylor 1/18

OU was a little Jekyll and Hyde this week... at least, I think that’s what I want to call them. They dropped a game to a top 20 team, but then responded by knocking off a top-10 team. Anyway, the Sooners proved they will be a tough out in conference, and if they get the right breaks, will be able to make a run at the title.

Kansas State, 12-4, 2-1

Last week: win @ TCU 65-47, loss @ (15) Kansas 86-60

This week: vs (25) Oklahoma 1/14, vs West Virginia 1/18

The game in Lawrence got away from the Wildcats quickly, which was awesome. One minute it was 15-12, then before you knew it, the scoreboard read 31-15 in favor of the Jayhawks. The Wildcats could never put a run together and Kansas cruised from there. A dangerous Oklahoma team lurks on Tuesday. Can Kansas State get it back together and hang around for a possible run at a title?

West Virginia, 10-6, 2-1

Last week: win @ Texas Tech 89-86 (OT), loss vs (9) Oklahoma State 73-72

This week: vs Texas 1/13, @ Kansas State 1/18

The Mountaineers snuck out an OT victory against one of bottom teams in the conference, but then pushed Oklahoma State to a one-point finish. If WVU wants to compete and finish in the top half of the conference, they’ll need more performances like the one vs the Cowboys rather than the one vs the Red Raiders.

(12) Baylor, 13-2, 1-1

Last week: loss @ (8) Iowa State 87-72, win vs TCU 88-62

This week: @ Texas Tech 1/15, vs (25) Oklahoma 1/18

The Bears got a dose of Hilton Magic in a fifteen point setback, but then ran TCU off the court within about 10 minutes into the first half a few days later. Can the Bears take care of business this week and keep themselves in the running?

Texas, 12-4, 1-2

Last week: loss @ (9) Oklahoma State 87-74, win vs Texas Tech 67-64

This week: @ West Virginia 1/13, vs (8) Iowa State 1/18

Let’s be honest – the Longhorns are struggling. I haven’t watched any of their games, so I can’t go off of anything other than the scoreboard. They dropped two in a row to open conference play (OU and OSU) and snuck past TTU by 3 in Austin. How much longer will Rick Barnes’ gravy train run?

TCU, 9-6, 0-3

Last week: loss vs Kansas State 65-47, loss @ (12) Baylor 88-62

This week: @ (9) Oklahoma State 1/15, vs Texas Tech 1/18

As most expected, TCU was not very competitive in games against KSU and Baylor. After a road trip to Stillwater, I’m guessing both TCU and TTU will be gunning for their first conference win of the year – against each other.

Texas Tech, 8-8, 0-3

Last week: loss vs West Virgina 89-86 (OT), loss @ Texas 67-64

This week: vs (12) Baylor 1/15, @ TCU

The Red Raiders dropped a pair of three point games, giving them hope that they’ll continue to be at least competitive in conference play. Can they climb up to 8th or even 7th this year? If so, they’ll need to start winning some of these close games.

---

Questions to consider:

Judging by the non-con, I would have guessed TCU was going to be more competitive than Texas Tech. So far, that has not been the case. Can either of these teams put together a couple of wins and avoid 9th or 10th place in the standings? Will either of them knock off KU, Oklahoma State, Baylor, or Iowa State at any point? Don’t laugh, it happened last year…

If Kansas starts off 5-0, is the conference title in the bag?

Be honest with yourself – who will get the win on Big Monday in Ames?

And finally, seriously, how awesome was that game on Saturday???
