The latest AP Poll was released this morning and the Kansas Jayhawks jumped to no. 2 following an impressive win over a top five Duke team last week in Chicago. Heading into last week's Champions Classic matchup, Kansas seemed to have more question marks than most teams, but they might have come out of that marquee matchup with Duke with the most impressive performance. While Michigan State has certainly earned the right to the top spot, Kansas isn't far behind.
What does it mean? Not much of anything really. Other than rewarding the players and the fans with a little recognition and providing a little ammo for water cooler conversation, no. 2 at this juncture is insignificant. Kansas is young, they have a tremendous amount of talent and a great coach. How do they respond in a game against Iona when the emotions aren't as high? Furthermore how do they respond in other games during non-conference play while they try to further iron out their identity.
Early season wins like the one Kansas had against Duke last week are great. The excitement surrounding the program is high, the fans are excited and Kansas is at the forefront of the media conversation because of it. But at the end of the day it's a long season and there are going to be ups and downs. For now Kansas sits at no. 2, but let's not forget this team has THE toughest non-conference schedule this Fall and they're going to be tested again and again. Now they've got a bigger target on their backs and as always they'll be taking everyone's best shot.
