The picture is starting to take shape and it's becoming obvious that we have a very balanced and wide open Big 12 with the possible exception of a Heisman led WVU team. Texas looks good, Kansas State looks very good, Oklahoma looks good and everyone else looks like they have the potential to mix things up and create problems. It's going to be a wild year in the Big 12. It might not be a year where we have someone contending for the BCS title, but it's going to be a fun year for sure.

1. West Virginia

How They Fared: 42-12 win over James Madison

Who's Next: Maryland

Previous Ranking #1

Sometimes the best team is going to be the one that has the best and most dynamic player. West Virginia is going to have that in the Big 12 this year and the rest of the team hasn't looked too bad either. WVU still leading the charge through week three.

2. Texas

How They Fared: 66-31 win over Ole Miss

Up Next: Bye

Previous Ranking #4

Texas put 60+ on an SEC school and their quarterback play hit a level that hasn't been seen in Austin since Colt McCoy's departure. Yes it was Ole Miss and not Alabama or LSU, but the win is till big time and that Texas/WVU game in a few weeks is looking pretty good. I'll be there for that one, never been to Austin...can't wait.

3. Baylor

How They Fared: 48-23 win over Sam Houston State

Who's Next: La Monroe

Previous Rankin: #2

Honestly I feel like Baylor should fall more but who really earned the right to be ahead of them? The Bears weren't nearly as impressive in game two as they were in game one. In fact they looked very beatable. More and more the Big 12 is really looking very balanced across the board with WVU probably having the edge as a top tier team. After that this thing is wide open.

4. Kansas State

How They Fared: 35-21 win over North Texas

Next Up: Oklahoma

Previous Ranking #3

A little bit of a letdown for Kansas State in week three and that's to be expected after getting pretty wound up to host and demolish Miami a week ago. Oddly enough North Texas might actually be better than Miami, but Miami carries a name with it so the dip is acceptable. Kansas State is still scary efficient offensively and they will compete for the Big 12 if that continues. Next weeks matchup against Oklahoma marks the first HUGE league game and it will jump whoever wins the game right near the top of the power rankings and the list of contenders.

5. Oklahoma

How They Fared: Bye

Who's Next: Kansas State

Previous Ranking #5

Sooners were off this week. Huge opportunity next week as Bill Snyder and Bob Stoops go head to head. It's a chance for both teams to stake their place as a Big 12 leader for 2012.

6. Oklahoma State

How They Fared: 65-24 win over La-Lafayette

Up Next: Bye

Previous Ranking #8

Oklahoma State is really hard to get excited about right now, but they are also very difficult to write off completely. They can put up huge numbers against weak opponents, but they also seem to have a tendency to give up huge numbers when they play someone that matters. I wanted to keep the Cowboys lower, but they seem to have earned a small bit of the benefit of the doubt these past few years.

7. Texas Tech

How They Fared: 49-14 win over New Mexico

Next Up: Bye

Previous Ranking #7

Tech is quietly waiting in the shadows taking care of lesser opponents in the manner that a good team does. They need to be tested to really show what they can do, but right now they deserve credit for taking care of business in the manner you would expect from a team that has the potential to be solid.

8. TCU

How They Fared: 20-6 win over Kansas

Next Up: Virginia

Previous Ranking #7

Did Kansas play better or did TCU play worse? It has to be a combination. Yes the Jayhawks were improved, but TCU made mistakes and they weren't as effective in any phase of the game as one would have expected against the Jayhawks. Hopefully for our sake the game says more about the Jayhawks than the Horned Frogs, but for now we're dropping TCU to #8.

9. Iowa State

How They Fared: 37-3 win over WIU

Up Next: Bye

Previous Ranking #9

I want so badly to move this team up and they could argue for placement ahead of TCU, Tech and Okie Light, but that's all it is, an argument. I think the Cyclones will probably end up ahead of more than one team in the standings, I just can't commit right now because honestly teams 6-9 feel pretty even and every single one of them could probably sneak up on teams 2-5 on a given day.

10. Kansas

How They Fared: 20-6 Loss to TCU

Up Next: Northern Illinois

Previous Ranking #10

One week after falling on their faces, Kansas actually put together their most competitive Big 12 football game in quite some time. After this past weekend it's not completely ridiculous to think that the Jayhawks could pull and upset or two during the Big 12 schedule. Perhaps we're seeing the first sign of improvement in Lawrence.
