That UNC Duke

Game reminded all too much of the KU MU game. UNC had a huge lead ~10 points with over a minute to go and lost. Seth Curry’s 4 step travel before a crucial 3 point shot and no call.

It's not that I'm lazy; it's that I just don't care.

by KRichards on Feb 9, 2012 6:41 AM CST reply actions

Yep...

Classic case of live-by-the-3-die-by-the-3. Really saved Duke’s bacon on that one. I couldn’t help but see the same comparison as I was watching it unfold. Kept saying, ‘well, they won’t hit the next one…‘. Not a fan of UNC and I hate Duke but from an outside perspective, it was impressive. I missed the travel call (or rather, no-call) but had to admire how clutch their shooting was. Rivers put that icy dagger right through UNC’s heart on that last shot.

Took a hot shooting night to put it away but I don’t think Duke will consistently scrape out a win without using more inside presence. Did you see the stat they flashed down the stretch where UNC had 42 points in the paint to Duke’s 12? Unbelievable. Whatever North Carolina did (outside of 3-point defense), that’s what you do to beat Duke. They just got hot when it mattered most.

Big big win for KU last night

Feeling a lot better about the chances of another outright title. Not as many KU fans as in the past at Waco, and the fans were really into it for the first 15 to 18 minutes. This was my fifth or sixth trip to Ferrell Center and had never seen it A) sold out (although it was never 100 percent full) and B) that loud. My ears were ringing when Self called that first timeout down 7-0.
What can you say about Withey? He was huge and Baylor didn’t have a way to stop him. As usual, Baylor’s guards were kind of in disarray and Perry Jones was a mystery.
But I may have solved a bit of the Jones puzzle. He’s reminding me of Chenowith. Too timid to play inside on either end of the floor and doesn’t have ability to step back and hit a hook shot or jumper on offense. Needs another year at Baylor but will probably still be a lottery pick on potential, but he’s so Cheno right now.
More than anything, I liked the fact that KU was down several times in the first half and bounced back, then closed out the half strong and put the hammer down in the second half. Great run there for last few minutes of first and first 8 or so of second.
So it looks like Waco isn’t the home away from home it used to be for KU, but that’s OK, we’ll just take over TCU’s place starting next year. Rock Chalk!

Self's post-game quote on Baylor's early defense:

“They did a better job with that. I don’t know if it was great adjustments. It was guys getting in gaps and playing.”

Suppose giving all the credit to BU’s players is Self saying something about Drew, or am I reading too much into this?

Pay heed...

by pj_hawk4life on Feb 9, 2012 8:26 AM CST reply actions

My take is that you are reading too much into it

Baylor did a good job on D for the first about 18 minutes. Limited T rob to virtually nothing.

So did Bill Self pull a Herb Brooks last night?

It sure did seem that around the 4 minute mark in the 2nd half his entire team was gassed.

T2 had rubber arms and couldn’t hold onto the ball, EJ kept looking at the bench gesturing for a timeout, and Throbinson was pulling on his shorts during an offensive possession. On top of all that, Baylor was starting a mini run.

We had 3 timeouts to give and we had a comfy lead, I think 99% of coaches would have called a timeout or at least get some subs out there. Nope bench players kept their warm-ups on.

I just wonder if HCBS was wanting to see how deeply his starters were willing to dig…

by labbadabba on Feb 9, 2012 8:31 AM CST reply actions

Yeah, I didn't really follow what the thinking was there

The guys were so obviously tired that I was getting really worried about a misstep and an injury. Did Self address this in the post-game?

by KSinDC on Feb 9, 2012 8:38 AM CST up reply actions

I just assumed

it was as labba said in that last sentence. He wanted to use this opportunity to force a little mental toughness on his guys. The bench wouldn’t have gotten anything from playing a minute or two, but the starters can watch film and see that they softened. Everything’s a teaching opportunity to Self.

Pay heed...

what are the chances of UK pulling a 2010 and 2011 Kansas in the tournament this year?

I dont think the overall best team hasnt won it since 2009 UNC. a team would have to come out hot from 3 to really have a chance. Davis is just too much of a presence underneath

Love this one too:

"I didn’t see any reason to let him catch the ball," Johnson said. "He’s not a threat if he can’t catch the ball. So I planned on not letting him be a threat."

The one really sour note from last night’s game was that it seemed like Pierre Jackson could drive at will against our defense. Both the primary and the help defense needs to tighten up there.

I think it has to be him unless Tharpe makes some pretty drastic improvements. I don’t think that’s out of the question, it’s happened before with Self so we’ll see.

I do like that we have Releford, Johnson and Withey returning. That’s a nice corps that covers a few basis and the makings of a good defensive team as well. We’ll be young, but those three will be handed the team so to speak.

My wife and I had this exact conversation last night

I kind of don’t expect Tharpe to still be here, so I think the PG position goes to EJ by default. I’m looking forward to him defending other teams’ PGs, but I don’t have great confidence in his ball-handling skills or his decision making on passes. And it’s not like he can score like Tyshawn. Do any of the guys coming in having any PG skills?

by KSinDC on Feb 9, 2012 9:20 AM CST up reply actions

Why don't you expect Tharpe to still be here?

He’ll be fine. Russell Robinson had a rough freshman year too and he came around. Tharpe has basketball skills – he just doesn’t have an ounce of confidence right now.

by hiphopopotamus on Feb 9, 2012 11:19 AM CST up reply actions

he reminds me a lot of EJ his freshman year

tons of potential but gets easily flustered in games. He knows he will be playing in the future just needs to work out the kinks. I would be very suprised if he transfers

by fizzle406 on Feb 9, 2012 11:35 AM CST up reply actions

I don't expect him to be here because I think he wants to play

He reminds me of Jeremy Case (by the way, I was watching the Murray State – SE Mo St game on ESPNU last week and Jeremy Case was very surprised to see Jeremy Case in the handshake line for SEMo St after the game). I think he wants to play, but with the guys coming in the year behind him, I don’t see when he’s ever going to get that opportunity.

I don’t think Self dislikes him, but I think it’s clear Self doesn’t trust him. It’s tough for a PG to earn that trust, especially when he’s as turnover-prone as Tharpe has been.

by KSinDC on Feb 9, 2012 12:18 PM CST up reply actions

the thing about it

is he’s been given the chance to play but he has been very much over matched. I’m not saying that he won’t transfer but it would be extremely immature for him to not recognize his game isn’t at a high enough level yet. He was given many chances by Self but turning the ball over immediately when he touches it and playing bad defense are all right there on film.

Now, if he wants to go to a much lower level school to play against inferior competition, he could do so. (Although I don’t think he’d play right away at any BCS program) But he should definitely realize that he could get much much better playing here than anywhere else in the country.

All that being said, he’s an 18-19 year old kid so who knows if he’ll make the mature decision.

by I need more Esteban on Feb 9, 2012 7:29 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, it's the fact that his game isn't at a high enough level that makes me think he'll transfer

I think he’s been shocked by the speed of the game at this level, and might find the game more to his liking at a mid-major level.

Nothing against him. He seems like a good kid. I’m just not sure how much he can improve on things like not getting his pocket picked by faster defenders.

only people complaining about him are the ones that have been dismissed and they are having to do so by either putting out amateur press releases via twitter or through the examiner.

Yet you have a guy who was the backup QB at Notre Dame and received a standing O at the players banquet from his teammates and parents this past December speaking to Weis and his up front and honest approach. He’s said more than once that it might not always be what you want to hear, but it’s what you need to hear and as a player it’s what he appreciates because it’s intended to help him improve.

Then you have players taking to twitter applauding the new structure and approach in the S&C program. Brandon Bourbon commenting to the effect of …We could have actually done something if we had this S&C staff the last two years

I’m thinking some people couldn’t take honesty or perhaps structure.

It was a pretty great finish

Not just the buzzer beater, but the whole improbably comeback in a game where UNC clearly looked like the dominant team. Even if it had been Michigan-Michigan State, I think you’d be hearing a lot about it this morning.

Of course, it helped that it was a nationally televised highly hyped game with a great Syracuse-Gtown game leading into it. I’m sure the ratings were solid.

I'm no UNC fan and I hate Duke

but that whole last 3 minutes was like a perfect storm against UNC. I thought they had it wrapped up, just cover the three…. Duke had minimal inside presence all night (they flashed a stat of points in the paint just before the comeback: UNC: 42, Duke: 12). I kept thinking ‘oh Duke might make this one, but surely not the next…’ And every single three that had to go in dropped. And the single time it didn’t, the ball catches that impossible break off Zeller’s hand to drop through the hoop cutting UNC’s lead to 1. People have been talking about Rivers’ buzzer beater, which was monumental, but I think that enormous fluke was the game decider.
