Kansas Jayhawk News and Notes 2.7.12

Kansas Basketball

Despite loss, Jayhawks move up (!) in poll | KUsports.com
Nice little boost

Kansas-Mizzou: One Way to Win, One Way to Lose - The Triangle Blog - Grantland
Does anyone know if this guy has a dog in the fight here or is he just impartially saying that Kansas should have won this game and had it taken from them by an official that let himself get caught up in the moment?

Kansas-Missouri demonstrates pitfalls of conference realignment - Seth Davis - SI.com
H/T to Esteban for this one in the fanshots. It's worth putting in our news and notes today if anyone has some further discussion.

Really good look at the Big 12 race.

Bracketology 2012: Missouri Crashes The Top Line After Kansas Win - SBNation.com
Latest Bracketology. Mizzou earns the no. 1 seed in the Midwest. I know we like to harp on the whole Final Four thing, but they'll have as good of a chance as anyone at getting past that this year. Especially with the draw this one maps out.

Bracketology - NCAA College Basketball Brackets and Predictions - ESPN
Similar to the SBNation viewpoint but this one sends Missouri out West with Ohio State getting the Midwest regional and Kansas as the #2 seed in that situation. Might actually be a better draw for us although Florida would be a tough one and look, is that Bucknell?

Big 12

Weekly Watch: Week 9 - ESPN
Big 12 is labeled THE most exciting league race.

Tigers take league lead | KUsports.com
We're going to have to win out if we want this thing outright and we can only lose one of @Baylor and @K-State if we want a share. Missouri isn't losing at home and they've managed to scoot by a few close calls with very little left in terms of challenging road opponents.

Conference Expansion is a total C.F. I am a Penn State football fan, and personally I was happy they added one team to the league, I was ok with it being Nebraska, seems like a good school with decent sports programs. Hopefully for the B1G it stops there. But then you look at the Big East, the power basketball conference that it is, it’s about to be completely destroyed by I guess greed. UConn and Syracuse to the ACC? What? What sense does that make? The Big 12 being gutted in the last few years. I also root for TCU a little bit, I like to see the little guy get a shot and I am really excited about them joining the Big 12 but West Virginia? I hate them with the fire of 1000 suns so I look forward to the Jayhawks curb stomping them for the next several years. In basketball at least.

What sense does that make?

About the same amount of sense as San Diego St. being in the Big Least.

Anyone else pissed about Oklahoma last night?

The name of that song played at KC Comets games in the '80's was Giorgio Moroder's "The Chase." Now you know.

I see

Mizzou dropping a winnable one. I don’t think the close wins can be sustained, and we all remember how they played in Manhattan. I’d love to see us take out a little frustration on Baylor, and then Baylor pay it forward in Columbia on Saturday.

Pay heed...

by pj_hawk4life on Feb 7, 2012 8:39 AM CST up reply actions

That's probably what we sort of need to happen.

But I’m not seeing it. I honestly think MU loses one more. They are good at home and they don’t have any tough roadies left.

Agreed

KU must win out to win the league outright

I'm pissed

Jokelahoma even exits. It should just be part of Kansas.

Missouri keeps winning close games, eventually that will stop. Hopefully Kansas will take advantage.

I don't think there is a rule that it has to stop...

plus who’s to say they keep getting close games. They’ve faced the tougher part of their road schedule by far.

I've been saying for a while now

We need to stop assuming that Missouri is some sort of fraud and will beat themselves down the stretch. Obviously I hope MU drops some easy ones, but I don’t think we should be counting on anyone else to do our dirty work at this point.

Exactly

We had our chance. We blew it.

It’s not a rule so much as history and regression to the mean. Teams usually win about half of their close games, so if Missouri has won the majority of their close games then regression simply dictates that at some point that will change. Is there a chance that they are an outlier and can continue winning close games? Yes. But again, history and probability say otherwise. I think one of two things will happen. They will start losing close games or, they will start blowing teams out. They aren’t going to suddenly start getting smacked around. They are by no means a bad team but I don’t think they are as good as their record indicates either.

I hope you are both right...

I just think that maybe Missouri survived a couple scares that were their chances to lose and now they’ll be on the right side of things and win comfortably going forward.

that's possible

I also privately think it’s very possible that our performance makes this discussion moot

we won’t win enough games? or as in we run the table?

Honestly, that’s how I’d like to see it play out as well. I’d rather get it done ourselves than rely on others.

That would be fun...

I still think 15-3 wins it outright.. But 16-2 would certainly alleviate that concern. Big hurdle to clear for that tomorrow.

by hiphopopotamus on Feb 7, 2012 10:21 AM CST up reply actions

I'm thinking minus our game in Lawrence...

that they will start smacking people around at home and the three remaining road games are against opponents that they will handle with relative ease in the second half even if they start sluggish. So I hear what you are saying, I guess I’ll side with them starting to blow teams out.

In practice it is misused a lot, I think it was here a little bit.

Close wins/losses are close to coin flips. I think EREX21 maybe sorta implied that Mizzou is likely in the future to lose those coin flips. Maybe I was reading it too harshly.

by sax solo on Feb 7, 2012 3:52 PM CST up reply actions

ok i get what you're saying

i thought you meant in general. i was in class so i probably misread.

You seemed to be saying that

if Mizzou has, say, 4 more close games, that close losses are more likely than close wins in those 4 games. I think of close games as coin flips, so to me that sounded like a gambler’s fallacy.

by sax solo on Feb 7, 2012 4:37 PM CST up reply actions

Close loses are more likely in those 4 games only because of their recent string of close wins. In the end the whole point is that it is supposed to balance out to 50-50. Does it always? No. But the majority of the time it does.

Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.

by EREX21 on Feb 7, 2012 5:45 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, that's not how it works

A coin that’s been flipped heads five times in a row is no more likely to come up tails than a coin that hasn’t been flipped at all.

The only truth to the idea that MU is vulnerable to losses is that they keep playing close games. The score indicates that they’re only a little bit better than their opponents and it would only take a bit of bad luck for them to lose to some of those opponents.

by KSinDC on Feb 7, 2012 10:00 PM CST up reply actions

another way of saying it

Just because MU has won 4 of 4 close games so far, we don’t expect them to keep that up for their next 4 close games. We expect them to regress to the mean, winning 2 and losing 2, just like the average team would.

I'm thinking mizzou loses 2 more

once to us and then one more in the remainder of their cupcake schedule. Some team is going to come out hot and they will sleepwalk through the game until it is too late. I have seen this with Kansas many times over the years when they are in Mizzou’s position

Sweet

We’re their “most impressive win of the season”.

Next year, when they beat Ole Miss (or not) maybe that will be their “most impressive win of the season”.
