Kansas Jayhawks at Missouri Tigers Open Game Thread
Kansas Jayhawks at Missouri Tigers, Feb 4, 2012 8:00 PM CST
8 PM CSTWhere: Columbia MissouriTV: ESPNOnline: ESPN3.com
Welcome to Rock Chalk Talk and your open game thread for the Kansas Jayhawks vs the Missouri Tigers. This is one of the big ones. The final trip to Columbia to take on the Tigers as they head off to the SEC. This game also holds some significance because of the league race. The good news is that Kansas can leave with no worse than a share of the league lead. The bad news is that I suspect this will be a tough one. If Kansas can come away with a win, it's huge.
Kicking off the thread early today so feel free to use it all day long to talk about the matchup or to kick around some discussion on other games set for the day. Then at 8pm CST, we've got our game to keep things going.

nah...
I’m sure they would return the sentiment. We all know where we stand with eachother and I’d say it’s perfectly ok to express it on a day like today.
Questions, Comments? email me at denverjhawk@hotmail.com
Blatantly stolen...
…from a friend of mine originally met via KUSports…
“No matter what happens tonight, the end of the story is that I’ll always be a Jayhawk fan.
I’ll always be on the side of good, where the colors and traditions are meaningful and full of glory.
I’ll always be on the side with the long-winning tradition.
KU will always be the strong overall winner over Missouri (with 64% of the victories) and nothing can ever change that.
KU fans will look forward to winning seasons every year as well as more titles and real championships.
Whether Kansas loses or wins this one game, we will carry on to the next because there are bigger games to worry about down the line instead of using the results of this one game to define us like Missouri sadly does, even though we’ll get the last word at Allen.
So Rock Chalk forever, Jayhawks!!! GO KU!!!"
the wait is killing me
8:00pm? That is too cruel.
OSU & the hobbit tie it up with Baylor.
Looked like OSU was going to be annihilated in the first half, but Baylor has let them back in the game.
Didn't watch the first half,
But this has been one ugly second half. Feels like I’m watching Big 10 basketball at times.

Ugly is a good description.
Baylor looked like they had the game again, then they fumble around and let the hobbit hit a 3 to put them down.

Over the past week, Missouri fans have been asking "K Who?" and "Who U?" We’ve actually met before, but allow me to re-introduce ourselves.
We are the Kansas Jayhawks, 5-time national champion, 54-time conference champion, and undisputed Swag Heavyweight Champion.
Some people call us the greatest program in history. Others call us the pride of college basketball. We just want to be called champions.
But you can call us your permanent source of misery. You’ve been beaten by us more than any other team.
In fifteen years, we have won the Big XII eleven times, which is 3 more times than you’ve finished with a winning record in the conference.

If we calm down and stay out of foul trouble, we should win this.
Gotta figure out a way to stop them from going on these runs when we get the lead.
Up 6 early, they go on an 10-2 run. Up 4 with 4 minutes to go, they go on an 11-2 run to end the half.
I think the run happened mostly because of foul trouble though.

First half notes:
1. We’ve done a terrible job of exploiting our size advantage. Look for HCBS to figure something out on that and try to go to it early and often in the 2nd half.
2. If T2 doesn’t play that well, we’re down 12 easily right now. He’s carried us big time. Hopefully others can pick it up so T2 doesn’t think he has to do it all 2nd half.
3. Got some decent contributions from Wesley and Young. Teahan…well, I think I’ve said enough.
4. First 5 minutes of this half will be key. If we’re even, we’ve got a decent shot. If they get the lead out to double digits, it could be a LONG 2nd half for us.

Storming the court is rarely justified. IMO, it should be when an unranked team beast a top 5 team, or when any team beast a #1. That’s about it. And even that could be a little too much.

I hate sounding like a MU fan complaining about the refs
But I can’t see them coming back in the last 3 minutes without those crazy calls on Robinson (the charge and the travel).
Well yes
but I hate to pile on T2 because he played a really excellent game but his last minute and a half was definitely ‘Bad’ Tyshawn

Yeah, but building a lead that big with 3:00 to go ought to allow you to make some mistakes down the stretch and still win
If either of the Robinson buckets count we still win
We did an absolutely awful job of clock management when we had the lead.
None of those bad calls would have mattered at all if we had run off more clock when we had the chance.
We didn't manage the clock well but they took the lead with plenty of time left
Clock management needs work, but it didn’t cost us the game
Missouri took the lead with 0:56 left.
Earlier, T-Rob got an offensive rebound and a new 35 sec shot-clock and was swarmed by 3 Missouri players. Instead of passing it out to burn off 35 more secs, he tried to force it and turned it over. Had he passed it out and burned most of the 35 secs off, it would have put a great deal more pressure on Missouri. And that is just 1 instance where we did silly things early in the shot clock. Had we played smarter, it would have been much harder on Missouri.
To use a boxing analogy
We had them on the ropes, they caught us with a counterpunch, and then we folded like a cheap suit. My phone blew up after the game. I don’t even want to look at it. Probably a bunch of slaver trash talk. Ugh.

T-Rob missing baskets with 15+ seconds left on the shot clock . . .
. . . at the end of the game was the decider. Use the clock.
The basket was called off for a bogus traveling call
And the other for a bogus charge call
Oh, one of them.
I think that was a charging call where his left elbow went into a Mo player who may have flopped. I’ve seen it about 20 times and it, while possibly disputable, still doesn’t take away from him missing a basket with lots of time on the clock on the prior shot (w/over two minutes of game time). KU lost this game based on poor late game/shot clock management. I’d like to say differently as a KU fan, but that is the truth.
How much time was left when Mizzou took the lead?
I don’t see how our admittedly poor clock management made the difference.
Maybe we're using different standards.
It is not a matter of when MU took the lead. I’m discussing the sensible option of not playing stupidly and giving away the lead. Robinson shot the ball at 2:25 with 18 second on the shot clock with an 8 point lead. That is not smart.
He got his own rebound and traveled two seconds later.
Shooting the ball with 15 second left on the shot clock with an 8 point lead, with under 2:25 to go, on a non lay-up or dunk, was not smart. I think that is pretty standard basketball IQ.
This loss pisses me off more than you could know; if I’m wrong about this, and somehow not being a KU fan by realizing reality, please let me know.

I agree with all that
but you don’t really want to go into a slow down just to go into a slow down either.
I write everywhere. You're probably better off following me on twitter
I completely agree that the clock management and situational awareness were terrible
I just don’t see how the outcome is different if Robinson is making those plays 10 seconds later in the shot clock.
What is better?
Non-sensical shots early in the shot clock, of which misses let Missouri back in the game
OR
potential misses late in the shot clock, where Missouri is forced to make shots to be back in the game?
Option two is better. I’ve heard plenty of coaches and announcers comment on this sort of stuff. I’m sure you have, too.
I think that it can go either way
Defensive stops because the offense can’t get a good shot late in the shot clock can energize a team’s offense.
Plus, I only have a problem with one of the Robinson shots – the first out of control one. The other two shots! The one negated by the bogus charge call and the one negated by a travel that resulted from a Moore shove were both good possessions to my eye, but they just started too early.
Wouldn't it be better . . .
. . . for KU to have had the ball for an extra 30 seconds (hypothetically) for the last few minutes of the game. Generally, the team with the ball does not allow the other team to score. I’m sure you would agree with this.
I would have been much less happier with jacked up shots iafter running the shot clock down
I think 8 times out of 10, we get two baskets out of the two Robinson possessions and the game gets salted away.
agreed. If you get a good shot, take it
I write everywhere. You're probably better off following me on twitter
I'm not a fan of the prevent defense or the four corners offense
Stick with what got you the lead. Get the bal in to Robinson and let him take god shots if he’s got them.

you should put up a Fanpost tomorrow
The name of that song played at KC Comets games in the '80's was Giorgio Moroder's "The Chase." Now you know.
Did you watch the MU Texas game this week?
MU tried to take the air out of the ball to protect a lead down the stretch and their offense ground to a halt and they gave away the lead.
I don’t think this is as cut and dried as you see it
I watched the game
I’ll look at the boxscore again. Even if true, that would seem to be a small sample size against reality.
I rarely question your posts, but I wonder if emotion is ruling.
That is a very nice compliment
And I agree that time management wasn’t good. I didn’t like Robinson’s drive from the wing when it happened and I didn’t like Tyshawn racing across the floor to ultimately get stripped.
But I also felt in real time like the play where Robinson got called for a travel was a good possession, and I disagreed with the travel call.
Usually I like Gotlieb, but ragging on T2 like that is wrong
We would have been blown out in the 1st half if T2 wouldn’t have been in there

and he was our only real bright spot in the first half. But having said that, we started to dominate them when we went inside and used T-Rob and our size effectively. Why couldn’t TT (our senior point guard and 4 year starter) see that in the first half?
He was the only one who kept us in it the first half.
Really it was just a perfect storm. Lucky threes, plus two clearly wrong calls, plus us tightening up and not playing well down the stretch.

The name of that song played at KC Comets games in the '80's was Giorgio Moroder's "The Chase." Now you know.
I don't think he was supposed to shoot it.
I can’t go back and look, but I think Teahan was going towards the corner and that’s where the ball was supposed to go. Of course I could be way wrong, that’s just what my memory is telling me, and my memory does a pretty good job of making me look like a fool.
Yup.
It’s “Chops,” which is HCBS’s go-to play in the final seconds when we need a 3. You may remember it from the 08 National Championship, the 07 Big XII championship game, or even the 08 loss at Okie State. I’m almost positive HCBS told EJ to look for Conner in the corner (it would have been Rush in 08, btw). Still, EJ’s gotta be ready to shoot it if it’s open.
Criticize FHOFNCHCBS at your own risk...
I agree, and I was screaming at him to shoot it.
That doesn’t change that he wasn’t the one who was supposed to take that shot, Conner was.
I don't remember if Teahan even touched the ball, did he?
I’m not saying he didn’t, but I would not even want him touching the ball late in the game.
No, he didn't.
Saying that Conner was the one who was supposed to shoot it is probably going too far on my part, but it certainly looked to me like EJ was aiming to pass the ball to Conner in the corner, he just couldn’t get it there because of the defense. Combine Conner running to the corner with EJ hesitating to shoot the ball makes me think EJ wasn’t the one who was supposed to shoot it.
Could be wrong, that’s just how I saw it.
Did we just get Memphis'd?

well missery can definetely thank the refs for that one. we were up 8 at the time and then the ref makes just an unbelievable rediculous call against robinson ARE YOU SERIOUS? not even close to a charge really seiously. unreal. that was such a blatent block and not even a good flop. christmas just came early for those guys. can’t wait for the rematch in allen. it came to what i thought they have NOBODY AND I MEAN NOBODY that can stay with robinson when we run the offense against that team like we are surpose to robinson is a beast. the whole thing turned on that call. after that i knew well its over . that call whether you think or not was the game 2 minutes to go and up 8 and they call that it should of been a block and 2 shots. well they still coming to lawrence get ready

It was a 50/50 call. It went the other way.

I sort of agree.
We should have been pounding it inside in both halves of the game to both our bigs. We did a half-assed job of it. We only used 1 big and only did it in one half.
Combination of his fouls/lack of playing time in the first half
And TRob going beast mode in the second half. Nobody was looking for him because TRob was kicking butt.
I thought Withey
was the reason we had such a big 2nd half. He completely shut down Mizzou’s interior game through almost the entire 2nd half. He altered shots, made the occasional block, got into passing lanes and forced some turnovers and came up with some big rebounds.
I’ll take that every night from him.

It doesn't matter how much he shoots
It at least opens things up inside for Robinson and there is another rebounder present
He was the reason for the second half..
Then we put Teahan in who is running around like a chicken with his head cut off, fouling, and turning the ball over! How did Self not see that?
and then he hit 2 threes...
but yeah, Teahan is not very good

The pomeroy evidence finds surprisingly little home court advantage
And within that, much is attributable to factors other than officiating. I know the idea of home court officiating is widespread, but I’ve not seen a ton of evidence for it. We certainly didn’t get much help against KState.

Given that home teams win more and fouling is a come-from-behind strategy

And tha t was more flop than an actual charge but I can use the video to show t-rob causing contact with his shoulder.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
Rock Chalk Talk
My memory is that the contact was against a part of the defender that was not above his feet
It’s hard to see how Robinson gained an advantage by the contact, and I didn’t think the contact came against a part of the defender that was in position.
It was square in the defenders shoulder.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
Rock Chalk Talk
Just grabbed
A pic of Taylor’s charge and it’s really defensible either way.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
Rock Chalk Talk
I appreciate your level headedness and expertise
But there’s still a huge problem if all the 50-50 calls go one way. There’s no mathematical difference between four 50-50 calls going against you and one nearly certainly wrong call going against you.
The difference is 50/50 means a different thing to a fan and a rational observer.
You cant rationally say every 50/50 call went against us.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
Rock Chalk Talk
I didn't mean to suggest that every 50-50 call in the game went against us
But if somebody points out four pivotal calls in the last two minutes and all of them went against us, it matters whether they were defensible or egregious individually but collectively, it’s still a problem, even if each of them is defensible individually.
No. Denmon drilling a 3 from 25 on a catch and shoot is a problem.
Each call has to be dealt with individually. Otherwise you’re essentially asking for make up calls and there’s no way you’re doing that are you?
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
Rock Chalk Talk
The officiating should reflect the actual play on the floor
To use an analogy, if a coin is flipped 20 times and comes up heads 18 times, and somebody complains, it’s not dispositive to break each coin flip down one by one and show that it was perfectly reasonable for the coin to come up heads that time. The events have to be considered collectively.
I am interested to see your analysis and to see the plays broken down. I’m only trying to point out that four individually defensible calls are not necessarily defensible (or not as defensible) collectively.

Denmon was ridiculous.
Almost every one he launched was contested and deep.

Eh, maybe its the 13 beers in me
But I’m over it. They held serve. Love that we get them in Lawrence. Let’s take em down there, avenge the loss, and move on.
Like I always say, there are bigger fish to fry. I’ll take a Final 4 over any league hardware and etc. This team has the ability to do it. And a game like this will have them salivating in the future.
This is a flawed team with limited offensive weapons. But they play good defense, they are athletic, and they have heart. A few breaks for em in March could be huge. This is one loss, in early February, to a top 5 team on the road. It hurts that its Mizzou, but lets just move on. The goal is winning the league, getting a good dance seed, and making a run. All three are still in play, and these days, I’m more for the latter.
Having said all that, Jesus we are thin. If Taylor and Robinson both aren’t totally on, we can’t beat good teams, especially on the road.
Shit happens when you win championships

my biggest issue is I feel like, even though we’re tied for the lead, the conference championship streak is over. We’ve only just started to roughest part of our conference schedule. Meanwhile, Missouri has a relative cakewalk through the rest of the season. That’s what makes me far more upset than simply losing tonight’s game.

until tonight i repeat until tonight. conner has been in a really bad funk lately. what is exactly is his role? his role on this team is when inserted in the game is to drain the three and until tonight he had done nothing. he has been hurtin us. he is SLOW defensively. getting burnt other teams take advantage of that not hittin three’s so if your not hitting and getting burnt then you need to HAVE A SEAT. ya tonight he hit a couple but still getttin burnt getting beat way to much on the defensive end
He hit both shots that he took.
I agree that he is not the man, but he did not lose this one for KU. Truth be told, he played a whole lot better defensively than I expected.
