sorry my son hit post
I rowed for KU in college, and we borrowed a boat from K-St. We used an F-350 crew cab with dualies to pull the trailer. When we returned the boat we stopped at the local Sonic. We laughed that we barely fit in the drive-in parking space. Then I looked around and saw that 2/3 of the vehicles there were the same size.

I honestly believe that losing at MU doubled our chances of winning this game
This team has been prone to losing focus this year, but since the MU loss, we’ve been locked in. I don’t think we’re enough better than K-State (I’d say we’re about 7 points better on a neutral floor) to beat them in Bramlage with a lackadaisical effort, but I don’t think there’s much chance of a lackadaisical effort now that we need every game to lock down the conference title.
KU by 5.

Looks like Baylor gave up on their team a bit...
quite a few empties for tonights Iowa State game. Just another reason that Bill Self’s run in the league is so impressive. There are no nights off on the road for Kansas.

I just came here to post almost the exact same thing.
Haven’t been paying that close of attention to it, but they just showed a baseline shot down the court and there looked to be a ton of empty seats.

I'm gonna go with KU by 9.
I think we lose one more game this year, likely this one or at Okie St. Just a feeling. I think we end up 13-3 and tied w/ Mizzou for the league. Just a hunch. I don’t think we’re good enough to run the table from here on out.

You're most likely right
But I can’t help but be optimistic and think we win out. I do think we’ll lose in the Big 12 tournament. Call me crazy but I expect Texas or ISU to win the tourney.

as much as I'd like to see a Mizzou - kansas B12 tourney final
it’s gonna be tough on both teams considering roster depth (ie, the lack thereof)

Considering team depth, it would probably be best for both teams to avoid the tournament final

Question for the gallery.
The Davis for POY momentum is building and as usual ESPN is driving the wagon. Step away from your loyalties and try to be objective…does he have an argument?
Maybe, but I don’t think he beats out our guy and I hate that Robinson could become a victim of the flavor of the week mentality that ESPN tends to have. I think Robinson needs to deliver in a few statement games. Tonight, Missouri at home being the two I’m circling.
The worst of it is that had we held on in Columbia they’d still be gushing over that second half.

There's no question that Davis has a bigger upside
Certainly offensively, TRob is more complete and carries a much bigger load. Davis is really really special defensively, but it’s not like TRob plays bad defense. Both have been really impressive at avoiding fouls, Davis even more impressive considering the blocks. It’s really a wash. But I think voters will be put off by the most demonic unibrow in existence.
argument? sure
but the fact that he doesn’t really do much on offense really hurts him for me. He has good percentages obviously but he just scores easy ones at the rim and that’s it
I write everywhere. You're probably better off following me on twitter
take away a few inches from davis' length and he is not in the POY discussion

But Jamar Samuels taking an early three is? Really Bob?
They are sending everybody to the offensive glass
And we are sending almost nobody.
Interesting coaching decisions early on.
that's fairly par for the course for them
I’d say we send more but K State’s a rough defensive rebounding team so probably don’t need to. Better to make them pay halfcourt

I'm not sure how they're not over the back on Robinson every time he pulls down a rebound
But I’m okay with them not calling fouls. I’d rather get beat up a little than get in foul trouble
I'm a couple minutes behind (dvr)...
…but having no problems with ESPN on Time Warner down in Austin.
Just a data point.

GREAT NO CALL!!!!
That looked real familiar
Questions, Comments? email me at denverjhawk@hotmail.com
I love the no call on the contact there just to show MU fans that that's not always a charge
One of them was making a ridiculous argument that the refs consistently call that a charge so we shouldn’t be upset about the call at the end of the game in Columbia.
Yep
rg463, I hope you’re watching KU vs KSU game.
If not, go to 2:24 of the 1st half.
i was watching, and the argument was that in that game the refs were going to the charge repeatedly.
the op said he wanted consistency and I simply pointed out that in that game, they were very consistent with the charge/block call.
No
Contact while driving the lane almost always draws a foul one way or the other
And, for what it’s worth, it’s also not the case that the refs blew a whistle on every contact in the lane in the KU/MU game.
well, that's two different points I was making.
First, that in that game, they were calling plenty of charges. Then you said that the inconsistency wasn’t that they were calling charges, it was that they were calling anything since at some other points in the game you think there was more contact with no call. So I responded that the threshold for a foul when two people collide while one is driving the lane is lower than, say, when two bigs are fighting for position on the block.
Penhawk's original point still stands
We wish the refs would be consistent. So do the national writers criticizing the call.
The objection to the call on Robinson was that it was inconsistent with how that contact is usually called. The contact in this game at 2:24 in the first half was a good example of the no-call that usually results on that sort of contact even if (as happened both in the K-State game and the MU game) the defender flops.
We all wish refs would be consistent.
I just disagree with the notion that they were inconsistent in this case. People drive the lane specifically because it’s a scenario in which more fouls are called. So just because they didn’t call whatever foul you think they should have earlier in the game in a different scenario doesn’t make that call inconsistent. What would make that call inconsistent is for a block to be called in a similar play at a different point in the game. Since very few blocks were called on those type of plays in that game, I maintain that the refereeing was consistent if nothing else, or at least as consistent as basketball refereeing will ever be.
Are you saying that my conclusion isn't logically required to be true?
Experts are experts.
The fact that they hold a position makes it more likely to be true.
Also, unbiased opinions should carry more weight than biased opinions.
I'm saying it isn't necessarily true because a bunch guys who write about basketball say it is
Furthermore, I don’t believe we’ve established any method to determine how many or what percentage of ‘experts’ thought it was a bad call. Maybe you’d like to take a survey or something, but an combination appeal to authority/appeal to the populace really has very little meaning with the complete lack of context you’ve given it.
You might be more comfortable in a college faculty lounge
If you’re looking to establish something from mutually agreed upon premises through rigorous logical arguments, I don’t think internet discussion boards are the place for you.
In fact, I’m not sure the real world is the place for that.
I’ve taught logic classes for three years, but a big part of teaching is recognizing that basically every real world argument is invalid. It doesn’t mean we don’t ever learn anything. In the real world, expert opinions justly get deference. In the real world, biases matter.
so you teach logic and your argument is "Dick Vitale agreed with me so I'm right"?
Do you teach logic at KU, by any chance?
I never disputed that experts should get deference, I disputed that there was a consensus expert opinion and that the experts you’re citing are actually experts.
This. KSinDC isn't stupid by any means.

I have a hard time following you
Why are you posting links to logical fallacies if you agree that we’re not debating in rigidly formal logic?
Because arguments that are logical fallacies can still have probative value
So that objection doesn’t make sense out of that context
an appeal to authority can have value
but it’s not the ‘you lose’ card you tried to play.
Are you joking?
I qualified the statement (“largely”) and you read it as a “You lose” card?

A sampling
Jeff Eisenberg of Yahoo Sports’ The Dagger blog:
First Denmon drove hard to the rim, absorbed contact from Thomas Robinson and finished a three-point play to trim the deficit to five. Then after a very questionable charging call on Robinson, Denmon buried a pair of threes on back-to-back possessions to suddenly give Missouri a one-point lead with 56 seconds to play in a game that seemed lost just seconds earlier.
Andy Glockner of Sports Illustrated:
College basketball’s most delightfully confounding story rolled on Saturday night, as Missouri used a game-ending 11-0 run — and at least one dubious charging call — to beat back arch rival Kansas, 74-71.
Eamonn Brennan of ESPN
Of course, it’s not quite that simple. Kansas was not helped by an iffy late charge call on Tyshawn Taylor that just as easily could have been a blocking foul on Michael Dixon. It resulted in two Missouri free throws and a three-point lead for KU to overcome. Even worse, that call wasn’t nearly as egregious as the one against Robinson with 1:43 remaining; that easily could have been a block on Mizzou forward Steve Moore, an and-1 bucket for Robinson and a potential six-point swing, given Marcus Denmon’s huge go-ahead 3 a few seconds later. Kansas fans are not at all happy about this turn of events, and they have every right to their anger.
Jason King of ESPN
Moments after leaving the court following Saturday’s 74-71 setback against Missouri, Kansas coach Bill Self asked a few onlookers — "people that were unbiased … they weren’t Kansas people," Self said — about a controversial late charging call against forward Thomas Robinson that played a role in the Jayhawks’ loss.
"I was told that I don’t want to see the tape," Self said.
In other words, those people saw the same thing Self saw, the same thing ESPN analyst Dick Vitale mentioned during the broadcast and the same thing that still eats at Kansas fans days later.
The charging call on Robinson — which came with 1:33 remaining — was a bad one. The whistle should’ve never been blown.
That isn't a mathematical proof
YOU ILLOGICAL DOLT!
all of these are writers
and I’ve yet to see any particular reason why a sportswriter has any greater claim to expertise than you or I do when it comes to the basketball rulebook.
You don't see why people who watch games for a living
Have more expertised on how fouls are commonly called than people who watch many fewer games?
Nobody is making a rulebook interpretation. it’s all off of how that play is consistently called.
I don't think there's much value in the way things are expected to be called
because how that call is handled next week or next year is beyond the scope of the referee’s job. His job is to call the game consistently that night. So Eamonn Brennan observing that such a call isn’t usually made doesn’t really mean much to me.
I also don't think that little contact was being whistled that night
But referees obviously are supposed to be consistent game to game too. I don’t know why anybody would say that they don’t need to be.
at least on the TT one I don't see how you could describe that as 'little contact'
whatever the call was, that one had to be a foul one way or another.
i apologize then, I thought we were talking about both calls
either way, i think the line between a call or a non-call is pretty thin on a play between two bigs in the lane. Hard to criticize a referee for that. If you think it was a blocking foul then ok, but any contact between two guys that big is going to be somewhat significant.
I think it was a play-on no call
There wasn’t much contact. The defender flopped but that shouldn’t change anything.
Again, I have a hard time with saying a call is horrible when your main point of contention is that you think it was a flop.
I think it’s necessarily difficult to judge how much contact there is between two guys that big.
I don't think it is that difficult
And, again, this isn’t completely dispositive, but lots of people with no obvious bias, think it’s a terrible call.
The block/charge is probably the toughest call in basketball, but I think the widespread reaction was that this wasn’t particularly close (not saying it should have been a block necessarily). It was just a bad call.
And I think 9 times out of 10, that's ruled a play-on
Which why I was glad we had an almost identical situation in the first half tonight.
Although the quality of the officiating tonight was so horrendous that I hate using this game as an example of anything.
officiating is always horrible in the eyes of the viewers
because officiating a basketball game is a very hard job. People think these are obvious calls after they’ve watched things in slow motion from five different angles.
I think the KU-MU game stands out
The coverage of the game has highlighted the call because the call was particularly objectionable.
Referees sometimes make bad goaltending calls, but the Syracuse-WVU game was highlighted by the national press because that missed call was particularly egregious.
No game is officiated perfectly, but we can still draw distinctions between better and worse officiated games.
This game
was terrible all around but the highlights won’t include the bad calls as the Missouri game did, as they didn’t really affect the game in a very obvious way.
exactly. people made a big deal of the bad calls last week because of when they happened.
not how egregious they were. worse calls happen all the time, they just rarely matter so much or so obviously.
no, it highlighted that call because it came at a particularly important time
there are worse foul calls made every game than a charge that left a 280 lber on the deck. Flop or not, the referee at least has a reason to make that call. Plenty of calls are made for no particular reason whatsoever.
They didn't highlight all the calls down the stretch
They highlighted the particularly egregious one that may have altered the outcome of the game.
May have?
I don’t think there’s any doubt that it affected the game. Call it correctly and that’s an and-1 and we’re up 9 with a chance at 10. Totally different game.
what other calls were there to highlight besides that and the TT call?
Were there any other fouls in the last few minutes other than KU fouling to stop the clock?
3 other fouls calls after 71-63
Only one was intentional (with 10 secs left on Elijah Johnson)
these are facts
Missouri won
kansas lost
basketball referees generally suck
I believe in the The Black & Gold Standard
And Kansas loves Westboro Baptists
because, you know, there’s more of them in Kansas than there are in Missouri.

It’s when MU fans want to go beyond that and say that there are no grounds for objecting to the Robinson call that I will dispute it.
Stick to the final score and you’ll hear no objection from me.
you can object to the call all you want, just like we objected to the charge call on Dooling in 2000
like I said, basketball refs typically suck.. it’s just a matter of dealing with it and hoping one’s team doesn’t put themselves in a position where one call, questionable or otherwise, can result in an unfavorable scoreline at the end of the game

That was the worst call of the night
I just watched it in slow motion. The defender moved three feet while EJ was in the air.
I feel it's been a point of emphasis to refs
to keep games close at all costs. No other reason that reffing has been so horrible all season. I’m not just talking KU either. Look at that Duke/UNC game? PLenty of other examples too

O/T
But a snowplow went by my street 3 times in the last 2 minutes. All of the snow has melted so he was just scraping metal and creating massive sparks.
Seems like the street department needs to use their equipment so they can get new stuff next year even though they shouldn’t need it

I didn’t get to watch the game and had to listen to it on the radio. I have a question though, how bad were the refs? Bob and Chris were goin off that they made quite a few bad calls.

I am concerned that T-Rob has not looked as energetic as usual.
Is it just me? Or has he looked slow and flat?
I think tonight
he was worried about fouls
I write everywhere. You're probably better off following me on twitter
Not just you.
I don’t know if he’s mentally or physically worn down, but I don’t think he’s had his typical energy for at least a month now. Hopefully he can get things back together.
He'll benefit from 5 days off for sure
This late in the grind, I think Self will have guys practice lighter and have more rest. We looked gassed at times tonight. So did KState. Hard to play Saturday and turn around and play Monday.

Teams are really focusing on him defensively
And an awfully lot of really frustrating things happened to him tonight to take him out of his game. I wouldn’t be too worried about it.
I think he's looked pretty low energy the last several games
His first half against OU, Iowa State, Baylor and MU has been pretty crummy.
Officials
are never good in games like this. When one team makes it their purpose to foul on every possession as KState does, it makes it exceptionally hard to decide what is foul and what isn’t. The obvious answer is just call it as you see it and the overly physical team fouls out but that never happens… For some reason officials feel the need to adjust to the more physical team and that almost always makes them look like they have vision problems.
All in all I think we played well in a tempo we’re not very familiar with though the decision making at the end needs to get better.
I actually didn't think KSU was that physical in the first 3 or 4 minutes
But the officiating was bizarre from the beginning, which gave them license to get more physical.
KU had two more team fouls than KSU did
Naturally, KState fans think this is wrong as well and are blaming refs. Sheesh.
Shit happens when you win championships
by Andrew Clark on Feb 13, 2012 10:39 PM CST up reply actions
It was 18-12 before they started fouling at the end.
No reason K-State fans should be complaining.
Well, I guess that’s not technically true. I’d be complaining if I was a K-State fans
Exactly
Game was horribly called but rational ksu fans won’t complain for 2 reasons- 1 they got at least as many of the bad ones in their favor and (more importantly) if the refs called a better game it would have been a tighter game and thus a ku blowout. They let you play the only type of game you had any hope winning. Feel blessed.

Best part of the game, for me
Is at the 11-8 mark in the first half, Withey gets a rebound, gets mauled by KSU players (a good on-purpose foul, prevented a lay-up and made him earn it at the line) and the crowd just boos like crazy. I think they would boo even if one of their players took a wrench to an opponents head.
Apart from the usual stupidity like that, great crowd. I think I’m ready to officially anoint the Octagon as the hardest place for us to play. Their bloodthirst for KU makes it tougher than other places that have given us fits, such as Gallager-Iba and whatever the name of Texas’ home court is.
Shit happens when you win championships
Plus I don't get the "beating KSU doesn't feel as big" sentiment from a lot of KU fans
Sure its not Missouri, but their fans should make it worthwhile for us. Camped out all day, the biggest game of the year for them, their superbowl, and we won. Kept our Big 12 title hopes alive. Likely knocked them out of the NCAA tournament. KSU fans I know are going nuts. The crazy hatred KSU fans have for KU makes these wins super awesome. I’m excited to see this rivalry get even bigger now that the traitors in the East are leaving.

I'm also excited for the rivalry
If Martin can recruit, we could have some serious games over the next few years. In any case, Bramlage is no longer a pushover, which makes the rivalry more fun.
Frank Erwin Center I believe.
Or is that Baylor? I know it’s a Texas school.
Irwin is Texas
Which isn’t a great home court at all. GIA is OSUs home court and up until a few years ago was one of the best advantages in the nation. Then they expanded it and it became very average against teams not named KU
