Depth potential factor with new Big 12 grind | CJOnline.com
It's been touched on several times since Saturday, but Kansas has the lowest bench production in the league. That hurts.
Bill Self worried about energy | KUsports.com
“It’s not about playing hard. I’m talking about just being enthusiastic, energetic. When we do that, we’re pretty good. When we are not (energized), we don’t appear to be near as athletic and don’t seem to make plays that players make when games are tight."

Not sure how you can put Baylor in as a top seed. Then again, not sure who I'd argue for.
Weekly walkthrough: Big showdown in Big 12 - NCAA Basketball - Sporting News
Kansas (17-4, 7-1 Big 12) at Missouri (19-2, 6-2), Saturday 9 p.m. Streaks can be overrated in sports. Championships mostly aren’t, unless they’re regular-season college basketball league titles – which rarely are suitably acknowledged. So what about a streak of league titles? Kansas has won seven Big 12 regular seasons in a row. This night may decide if there’ll be an eighth.

QB Turner Baty eager to compete | KUsports.com
“I think the biggest selling point for me was that I loved all the guys. But I think one of the other things is that the coaches told me, ‘Hey, you’ve got a chance to come in and play. We do not have depth at quarterback, and we will play the best guy no matter what.’ They said right away, ‘You’re gonna be competing for No. 1.’”

Big 12
Dixon, Mizzou slip past Texas 67-66 - KansasCity.com
Texas is pretty bad. Couldn't stay in front of Mizzou all night and then they had no help defense. I'm concerned about Teahan defensively on Saturday because I don't think he can effectively contain any of the Tiger guards. I know it's popular to write of Mizzou's chances, but right now we're going to have to win this league, they aren't going to go away.

Just an interesting story about the inexact science of evaluating talent.

Lunardi's bracketology...
I would love if his came true. #2 seed drawing Bucknell in the first round. I know a lot of KU fans would hate this, but this would give us a great chance for revenge.

I wouldn't be afraid of losing
but I wouldn’t want to hear about it for 3 or 4 days either

Too bad Texas
couldn’t pull that game out last night. Perfect situation to put Mizzou in the hole a bit. Now it’s going to be a nasty slog to win out 8th title outright. Mizzou has all their ‘tough’ road games (except KU) behind them and are 1 up on us by winning @ ISU.
Hopefully the scrappy hawks show up on Saturday or it’s going to be a long evening.

Longhorns (again) showed why they're an NIT team
Part of it is youth and inexperience, but a lot of it is coaching. Put Gillispie or Krueger on the bench and they’re battling K-State and ISU for fourth place in the league.

Texas did look completely lost
on that last possession when Haith switched MU into a zone. Mass confusion and a bad shot ensued.

Should have passed it back to Brown
He was wide open after he threw out of the double team. They also had a time out. Could have used it after seeing the zone.
Barnes was an upgrade from Penders, but if he doesn’t right the ship next season, he could be on his way out.

you really think so?
I think it would take a couple years of ineptitude for that to happen. He’s just recruited too well there.

I tend to agree with 1996
If they only go NIT this year and don’t right the ship as was mentioned after next season. I definitely think he is done.
It's not that I'm lazy; it's that I just don't care.
Longhorn fans are not very patient
and the donors will ante up if a big name is available. Like Brad Stevens.

yea I hear you
if a young, big name guy like a Brad Stevens is available. I’m just wondering if the UT faithful would put up as big a s*** storm for basketball as football. But that is an outside view so maybe I don’t realize how much they do care about basketball.

Making the tournament every year has become a big deal
A year or two of missing it and there will be many ready for an upgrade.
He is a great recruiter
but a lousy coach. His teams just don’t get better over the course of a season. However I don’t think the fire him after missing the touranment once. This would be Barnes 1st miss in 14 years at Texas. Tough to fire this:
• 12 NCAA Tournament appearances (18-12 record)
• 1 Final Four appearance
• 3 Elite Eight appearances
• 5 Sweet Sixteen appearances
I always drink the Kool-Aid
Going for #8 in a row!
I thought that was a real nice coaching move by Haith.
He has the Missouri boys believing and playing with confidence. They are very good in Columbia. I think if we can steal a win there it would be huge, but I am very doubtful. I think we split with them.
Does anyone like Rick Barnes or am I the only one?
Why is everyone so down on him?
I think we all have clouded judgement because we have been sooooo fortunate with Bill Self. This could have easily been us back in 2009 when we had the twins and Tyshawn as freshmen.
I don’t think that we could say the same thing for this year because we didn’t have a bunch of freshmen starting at the school and learning HCBS system. We just have a bunch of kids that had been bench players moving up to starting roles.
I think Texas will be fine. Next year, they will be one year wiser and winning those close ones.
What? A girl who likes sports...INCONCEIVABLE!
Yeah, Texas has clearly been the second best team in the conference since Self arrived.
Making the tournament every year is not easy. The fact that Barnes gets them there every year is one of many easy ways to tell he’s one of the best in the country.
I am pretty sure you're the only one
he’s a hell of a recruiter but his in game coaching is pretty pretty bad. Plus there’s a reason they’ve gotten significantly worse in the latter part of the year each of the last 4 years. How they didn’t win the league last year is beyond me.

I should say the only smart one
I’m sure there are plenty of people who don’t know the game as well as you do (or are blinded by their burnt orange glasses) who are big fans of his.

I don't know if Dan Hammer of RealGM is considered dumb
He crunched the data, and over the last five years, Barnes’ teams have been the 8th best in the country. That puts him right between Boeheim and Izzo. Over the last ten years, he’s also number 8, right between Donovan and Calhoun.
http://basketball.realgm.com/blog/218585/Top_NCAA_Coaches_Of_Past_Five_Years
Now, he’s behind Self on both of those lists so maybe he suffers by comparison, but the guy is producing results.
1. it's hanner
2. that doesn’t really have a game coaching ability component. He brings in a ton of talent and hasn’t done a terrible amount with it.
good try though. come again.

I thought you'd be glad to have some data. Given the condescension, I guess not.
Barnes’ results are top 10 in the country. If he’s a significantly worse coach than the other top-10 coaches, he’d have to be a significantly better recruiter than the other top 10 coaches in order to produce top 10 results. Is that the theory? That Barnes is a signficantly better recruiter than the other top 10 coaches?
Rivals has recruiting rankings from 2003 to 2011
Texas has 5 Top-20 classes in that 9 year stretch. Boeheim has 4 Top-20 classes in that stretch. Calhoun has 7 top-20 classes in that stretch.
As for player development
Barnes seniors have had higher ORtgs than his juniors, who have been just lower than his sophomores who have been higher than his freshmen. That compares fairly favorably to other coaches who are brining in elite talent that tends to leave early.
http://basketball.realgm.com/article/216610
Barnes is the best coach in Texas history
But that’s not saying much. And I think he peaked with the Durant-led team. They will be better next year. I just don’t see him ending his career there.
