Welcome to Rock Chalk Talk and your open game thread for the Kansas Jayhawks vs the Iowa State Cyclones. Two weeks to the day since the last meeting. Since that time the Jayhawks have built a two game lead in the conference and the Cyclones are sitting tied for 5th. Both teams have a lot to play for. Iowa State is looking for revenge and a big boost to their tournament resume. Kansas is looking to dodge the Big 12 road bug once again and begin a key stretch in the Big 12 title hunt on a positive note.

Any predictions
On what Royce Whites puts up on us today?
I think
he’s going to be limited now that we know where to focus our defense. Of course if others are hitting their shots…

Another Question
who else will put up stats against us?
If ISU is going to win...
I think Christopherson will be a guy that could have a big game.

Yeah its pretty ridiculous
It seems like everyone thinks that they can act like a 14 year-old on those boards. I am so appreciative that the entire SBnation fanbase seems to be a lot more reasonable than what you find at the LJworld website, ESPN, etc.

Good question.
It’s not like they need a SOS bump but I guess it does guarantee them ESPN time.

Hopefully we can shore up the penetration soon.

Why do we need to spend 60 seconds watching players shake hands?
And then follow that up by looking at scores?
Funny that they had to give us the starting lineups
After the first media timeout. Makes sense, but if you’d been watching the game on ESPN3 it was interesting.

Cue ISU grabbing an offensive rebound
against 3 Jayhawks. Ouch.
by hunter s. royal on Jan 28, 2012 1:20 PM CST up reply actions
Our offense is terrible
And is killing our defense, our half-court defense has been decent but they are getting us out of position in transition and then exacerbating it by driving and passing.

Agree with the O being awful.
We’re fumbling it away underneath the basket so badly it’s letting ISU burn us on the turnover.

At some point Teahan...
has played himself out of the rotation. Not sure why Bill Self continues to stick with him. He’s not Morningstar or Reed.

There's no one else?
I mean, I think we can play Ty, EJ, and Trav the rest of the game, but we can’t do that every game. Tharpe is way too turnover prone, and Merv is likely even more terrible on D than Conner.

You think he gets burned on defense now?
I would anticipate that working out terribly.
by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 28, 2012 1:30 PM CST up reply actions
Possibly but getting him away from the basket could actually help.
He gets pushed so low defensively on the blocks that he doesn’t have a chance. That wouldn’t happen against 3’s, add in Withey/T-Rob/Wesley for help against penetration and I don’t think it’d be horrible.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Its not that we aren't ready to play

They're a good team
playing a good team on the road and I wouldn’t expect to dominate.
And I know the numbers say otherwise but I still think we're way overrated.
Maybe not overrated but Taylor and Robinson have to play very well for us to be very good. If that doesn’t happen, it’s always going to be a struggle.

ISU seems to be running offensive sets and are flying all over the court when they are playing D. Def feeding off their crowd.

I'm impressed with ISU's ability to withstand the run
I was kind of thinking that they’d have a bunch of headcases with all these transfers, but they seem to be pretty mentally tough.
They’re going to be good in future years.
I posted something about Robinson vs. Collison earlier this week
As much as I’m enjoying Robinson’s success this year, I still feel like he’s nowhere close to the player Nick Collison was in college.
I know Collison had four years and got to start for 2 or 3 of those years, but I also think it reflects a bit on how college basketball has been affected by players leaving early. I feel like it took a much better game to be a dominant power forward back then.
Or am I just looking back at my college years with rose-colored glasses?
Collison was definitely a mcuh more complete player.
He did play a lot right from the start though.

except most of his shots that he makes
come in garbage time against bad opponents. he is virtually incapable of making them when they count, and has morphed into a terribly defending, bad pass prone machine
by rockchalk1187 on Jan 28, 2012 3:01 PM CST up reply actions
I looked it up earlier this season, and that's definitively not true
He only has one game where he’s had a made 3-pointer in the last 10:00 of a game against a non-top 25 opponent.
The perception that he does is bizarre to me.
Regardless
he is a liability. His shooting absolutely does not make up for the gaping hole in our team that he creates when he’s on the floor. He would need to be a lights out shooter to make up for it.
by rockchalk1187 on Jan 28, 2012 3:11 PM CST up reply actions
I agree with that
We have no useful depth.
But I don’t understand people making him out to be a worse or less consequential 3-point shooter than he is. He’s been a big player for us in some big games this year.
And there really is nobody else.
He is what he is. When he’s in, he takes open shots. On a top 10 team, he’s playing way too many minutes but I’m still not sold this is a top 10 team.

You're right. They haven't shot lights out.
Turned the ball over. Just got the loose balls.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Definitely missed a chance
to take complete control of the conference.

That's the most frustrating part.
Been worried about this game since the one in Lawrence, but I thought we’d come out better than we did knowing that we had a shot to really take control of the conference.
My biggest disappointment is our energy level. I know it's a tough place to play, but I felt like ISU was playing with a different energy level that us all game.
T-Rob didn't have it
And we key off of him.

30+ minutes a game finally getting to him?
He hasn’t been his super-human self these last few games. Seems like he gets his averages, but the domination doesn’t seem to be there.
His minutes are also rough.
Teams are beating him up below the basket, he’s got to be a little worn down.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Delayed reaction to his the anniversary of his mom's and grandparent's deaths?
Don’t know, but I’m sure he’ll pick up his play next game.

I thought they played pretty well
Their defense was good, and they certainly worked hard.
I think our defense deserves credit for their poor shooting.
This game makes me appreciate how important it is to keep Withey our of foul trouble
Those two moving screen fouls were really pivotal, I feel.
Good point, his absence allowed White to really go to work inside.
I’m still not sure of those two moving screen calls BTW.
This game really reinforced our lack of depth
Young showed some flashes earlier in the season, but there’s nobody off our bench I have any confidence in at this point. When any of the starters get in foul trouble, there’s a huge drop off.
I disagree.
They turned it over, but they played great D most of the game and out-rebounded us by a ton. Tough to win on the road, and we all knew that this was going to be a really tough game.

Ty with 16 points, 10 assists, 2 steals
Everyone else is not worth talking about.

Damn
we have to play ISU in Ames next. I was hoping you guys would give them another loss before then.
He put in Merv, Tharpe, and Junemann when ISU shot FT's with 15 seconds to go.
Then when we got the ball, he had all 5 guys basically go straight for the bench, and the only one still doing anything was Tharpe (I think it was him) and that’s because he had the ball. All of our guys were within a few feet of the sideline/bench area at the end.
Zero bench help.
2 baskets, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assist from the bench. Without Robinson and Taylor being All-American level, that’s enough to keep the team from being good.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Fetch did some good work earlier in the year on the importance of the bench
I feel like it showed that depth wasn’t that important.
Fetch, do you still have any of that data that you could compare our poor depth to previous good teams?
It might not be over the course of a season but I'd argue it is very important in a single game.
The difference being foul trouble in a game can force the bench on the court.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Oh, I definitely agree that it made a difference this game
I’d also think it would wear a team down over the season.
And Owen's a machine with the post game:
