Around SBN: Why Hockey Fans Should Root For Devils Vs. Kings

I for one am glad this is finally over. The guy seems scared of competition and is apparently a headcase.

I wouldn't have posted this except for the fact that I really liked Weis's statement.

Weis' statement

is in stark contrast to Berglund’s story that he was shocked to hear from outside sources that he had been dismissed from the team

Which is a surprise

Because BB has always been so upfront and honest with the media. The kid is 18 years old and doesn’t seem to be getting the best guidance but I wish him the best. Wish we would have cut him a year earlier than we did though for the sake of the kids that wanted to play at KU.

Love's Weis' statement

We just wasted $40K on this headcase. Call me tacky, but I’m not going to wish this kid the best of anything. The fact he didn’t respond to media requests for his reaction is pure chickensh*t.

The 40,000 is bull shit though.

Why match his bull shit with more of it? I still don’t think either side ends up looking decent out of this.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

12,500 per semester

times 3 semesters. Not far off 40 and that’s not including books, etc.

by bigreed on Jan 28, 2012 11:20 AM CST up reply actions

Because you have to set a precedent.

Weis bascially has just told the world….we’re going to do things the right way. No one player will get special treatment. Other kids had the sack to come and talk to me face to face and ask for a release. This pos didn’t.

I like it. The more Charlie opens his mouth, the more I like it. But then again, I fell for Turner Gill’s silver tongue too….

I like the "no one gets special treatment message"

But at the same time, Weis is the head coach. He’s a millionaire. He has Super Bowl rings. Why waste time getting into a war of words with some cocky 19 year old? The program is much bigger than Brock Berglund, and I don’t think trying to publically humiliate him is the best way to demonstrate that.

Brock was the one whoe took it public

CW’s actions would have been the same regardless.

that argument boils down to "but he started it"

which is exactly the mindset I don’t agree with here. Release him from the scholarship, and move on. Be the bigger man.

One guy is a professional working for a prestigous institution making millions per year.

The other is an 18 year old kid. It’s pretty clear who should be the one leading by example instead of trying to teach a lesson. Said it in the beginning and still say it, there was no good in dragging this out further.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Turning the other cheek

is fine but you have 100 other athletes to manage as well. Allowing a kid to have different rules because he’s willing to cry to the media is not a precedent you want set.

by bigreed on Jan 29, 2012 11:17 AM CST up reply actions

What different rules did he have?

He wasn’t even on the team.

So then why was he on scholarship?

It's not that I'm lazy; it's that I just don't care.

by KRichards on Jan 29, 2012 4:22 PM CST up reply actions

He definitely

had different rules under Gill. Anyone else on the team would have been booted far earlier. Then when Weis came he wanted to ‘talk’ to other coaches without being released. Once that was denied he wanted a blanket release, something not a single school in the country is going to sign. When Weis didn’t want to treat him differently than every other D1 athlete he lawyered up, started calling every media member in the Kansas City area, and threatened to sue.

What are you talking about? Kids transfer all the time.

They do

but never get blanket releases and definitely never are allowed to explore their options before requesting a release. This is simply a matter of this kid wanting to play by different rules than the rest of the team (and the rest of college football).

by bigreed on Jan 29, 2012 7:57 PM CST up reply actions

and now

he’s been dismissed from the team, and has nothing to do with the University of Kansas. Sounds like that’s what both sides wanted.

Exactly

I don’t think anyone wanted him to stay on the team, just that there is a process he had to follow and chose not to. You don’t reward that kind of behavior when you’re trying to manage an organization.

by bigreed on Jan 29, 2012 7:59 PM CST up reply actions

i tend to agree with this

I think Weis could have handled it better but I can see the merits in not wanting it to look like the 18 year olds are running the program like we had the past two years too

I don't think there was ever any risk

of it looking like the kids are running Weis’ ship

nope

but now there is a risk of Weis looking like a petty egomaniac

No one's saying anything about different rules

I have no problem with Berglund being kicked off the team. Dragging him through the mud in a public statement was unnecessary, and doesn’t reflect well on the University.

He probably spent 10 fold more time on 610 and other media outlets

than he did at practice over the course of an entire year.

It's not that I'm lazy; it's that I just don't care.

This doesn't look good for either party, nor for RCT if this is our reaction

This “headcase” is exactly whom we should have expected – he broke his commitment at CU to come here, why are we surprised when he broke his commitment to KU? I didn’t hear anyone at the time say, “Nah, we don’t want this kid who’s not fully committed”.

And “not wishing the best” just sounds petty, and he’s “chickensh*t” for not talking to the media but we laud coaches for running a tight ship when it comes to not leaking info?

I don’t want to be defending the kid b/c he hasn’t exactly handled his time at KU well, but this piling on and lack of empathy really bothers me.

Well...

the kid has been talking to anyone that would listen for the last 2 weeks so his sudden silence is a little strange.

by bigreed on Jan 28, 2012 1:09 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

There are plenty of recruits that switch their commitments

that end up being solid contributors to their program. Good riddance to the headcase is very reasonable.

by dagger108 on Jan 28, 2012 6:41 PM CST up reply actions

I agree that it is a good thing - it has been a distraction and it's probably for the best that

he’s moving on. And most of the problems were brought on by him – his legal troubles are where this all started.

Rivet, for instance, is generally outspoken, which I think is a good thing, even though in this case I feel like maybe some went a little too far. But at least the worst thing said about Berglund here is probably a tiny fraction of the crap that gets thrown around on KU Sports, KC Star, etc.
